Drinking alcohol while on antibiotics (oxytetracycline)

Basically im taking oxytetracyline to help keep me spot/acne free. I've been taking it for 2 months now 4 tablets a day... (2 twice a day) and i haven't drank any alcohol in this period.

My mates having a party on friday and if i go im going to want to drink for a social boost.

Whats the worst that can happen? does it only stop the tablets working fora short time while the alcohol is in my system? or will i break out in a huge rash, have projectile vomit and die in weeks time?

speak to your GP. Different drugs affect different people in different ways.

Whenever I'm shoved on antibiotics I usually ask if its OK to drink alcohol with them- last time when I was on penicillin it wasn't so its usually worth asking someone who is qualified instead of just posting on an internet forum.
I've drank alcohol while on oxytetracycline before and been fine, the worst it might do is stop the antibiotics working for a while

the reason you shouldnt take antibiotics and alcohol at the same time is it put excessive pressure on your liver. For 1 night will prbably be ok, but dont make a habit of it!

beware tho, you will get pissed much quicker than you expect!!!

bottom line, talk to your GP

Why must you drink at the party?

If you already have acne problems, you should avoid alcohol, as it makes it worse...

the worst from taking antibiotics & drinking alcohol?
well you could die. not sure whether it would be near instantaneous (coma type thing) or slow & painful as your liver fails...

whether that's likely with the type you're on is another matter.

but if your doctor/the instructions tell you not too it would be a tad irresponsible for any of us to advise anything else, surely?
& you can normally phone a GP with a Q i imagine. or NHS Direct perhaps.

A person I knew (a family friend) died from drinking alcohol while taking antibiotics!
i've done it loadsa times, and i'm still alive......

probably not wise to get absolutely slaughtered though, not that its a good idea anytime really

and alcohol doesn't make acne worse! where did that come from?

Metronidazole is the only antibiotic I know that causes projectile vomiting in combination with alcohol (along with stomach pains, headaches and other very unpleasant symptoms). Generally the advice to avoid alcohol is not because of any particular reaction with the antibiotic, but that alcohol is generally a bad thing and particularly so when you are ill.

While, as others have said, your healthcare professionals are a much more reliable source of advice than this forum, there is nothing in the data sheets on oxytetracycline to suggest any reaction or side-effects with alcohol; nor do they recommend abstinance from alcohol while taking the drug.

trust me hun,u dont want to be on meds and get smashed, they not only make u get sick outta ur brains, its gonna take u a while to actually get over the whole episode.....I know ppl who stop taking their meds a few days bfore and after they get drunk but tht is kinda desperate and stupid (if not wrong).
Worst case senerio is ud get sick or most likely thing is ud feel a bit groggy and nothing else, either way it isint really worth the risk.

SlyPie: I dont really have to drink at this party, but id rather not be the only sober person in the house... lots of my old school friends i havent seen in years are gonna be there too so I would like the social boost alcohol provides

anyway even if i don't drink now... at uni i need drinks to make myself more social and i dont intend on not drinking for the next couple of years or whatever taking these tablets.

The instructions that come with Oxytetracycline don't say anything about alcohol... the word doesn't get a mention i dont think.
You are actually allowed to drink on oxytetracycline. MY boyfriend was prescribed it yesterday and he asked and they said he was allowed.

Just found this on the internet too:

Question

I am taking two Oxytetracycline BP 250 mg twice a day for a month, then one twice a day, for a month for the treatment of acne on my back.

Being a young busy chap I enjoy a drink on the weekends.

I know the general rule when taking anti-biotics is not to drink. Is this the case with all antibiotics? Is it safe to drink alcohol while on Oxytetracycline? What are the consequences?

Answer

Generally speaking doctors give the advice not to mix alcohol with their antibiotics as there can be a direct interaction of the two drugs, or the alcohol can affect the absorption or excretion of the antibiotics leading to a reduction in their efficacy.

There is also the risk, of course, that during binge drinking the patient simply forgets to take his antibiotics at all. However, in your case, taking low-dose, long-term oxytetracycline for acne there is no great problem.

Drinking in moderation will not affect the action of this antibiotic, nor it's absorption or excretion.

I am pleased to say that you have the medical profession's permission to enjoy a drink with your friends at the weekend whilst continuing to take your treatment. The only consequence will be that you will notice you are a few pounds poorer when it comes to buying your round!

Yours sincerely

The Medical Team

Hope that helps!

I'm on those antibiotics. Been on them for like 5 months, GP's just put me down to 1 twice a day. (Used to be 2 twice a day) I never thought about drinking alcohol with them (I don't do it very often).

I think you would be ok with just a few drinks etc. (well thats just my personal opinion). Getting smashed isn't good the morning after (if your on antibiotics or not!).

Hope you have fun at the par-tay.

oh **** I never even thought about that... I had quite a lot to drink while on those things a while ago. Im so stupid lol.

but I survived so I guess it's okay. best to ask though, or check the leaflet with the drugs.
Lol oops just noticed in my post i put 'MY boyfriend'. Haha that sounds like a small child showing off. ' MY dad is stronger than YOUR dad'. how silly

But anyway....

I'll say it again - you CAN drink in moderation whilst on oxytetracycline (and yes, 'can' was supposed to be capitalised)

Speaking from personal experience:

A few years ago I tried oxytetracycline, and later Roaccutane, and I tried drinking on both. I was violently sick when I drank whilst on roacc.

Basically, just don't bother drinking. Odd bottle of beer/glass of wine would be ok, but you're on these drugs for a reason - to get rid of your acne. You should be able to manage without any alcohol unless you have a problem.
I know people who deliberatley take antibiotics when drinking to speed up the drunken effect.

It really does make you go drunk much faster but surely can be dangerous if you are careless in it.
