I've gotten my belly button pierced (and my ears, which don't really count). Just use the solution they give you to keep it clean, or try rubbing alcohol.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
That is the worst advice anyone could ever give. Do not use alcohol on piercings!
Use salt water for the first few days unless told otherwise and you have a good piercer. Then, either stay with the salt solution or you can change to Savlon Spray on things like navels if you want to.

i was told use the solution i was given, but if i didnt have it with me to use salt water. alcohol wld HURT!
I use something called system 2000 on my ears. I got my ear lobes peirced twice, but they dont get infected but the backs of ears tend to flake. I try to dry them off after the shower but it happens every now and then.

Another thing: school summer holidays are about 6 weeks long. There aren't many piercings with healing times of 6 weeks or less. So if you get a piercing in the holidays do not expect to be able to take it out or change the bar as soon as you go back to school!
it doesnt matter if you use alcohol or salt water. both are disinfectants and thats the whole point. i've had a piercer telling me not to go into the ocean with a freshly pierced navel, and another telling me to especially go into the ocean after i had the second belly button piercing done in another place.
the whole point is that it disinfects. piercers have different opinions, they have personal preferences.
eugh, think of what people have done in the sea! my piercer said that with my tummy i should try and sit out in the sun (im sure they werent trying to encourage me to get skin cancer) as that would heal it quicker guess each piercer to their own...
You guys are over-reacting to the whole cleaning issue.
I've had my ears pierced 6 times and my nose pierced once and I only ever used salt water for my nose and cartilage. I didn't use anything else for the rest and they healed perfectly. I had no problems at all.
Sitting in the sun (for those of you who do it) and the rest is a little too extreme. Just use some disinfectant to clean it everyday and you should be fine.
ears x 2, nose and tongue! Nose made me cry! umm tongue ddnt hurt until a while after, when it swelled and i could speak. - drink through straws and use the mouthwash they give you!
I agree with saltwater, its the bets thing for piercings. I hvae my ears done 3 in one (used to be 4), and 5 in the other (usedto be six) and i did have my eyebrow pierced. but it went away lol - stupid school! Always check what your school policy is about piercings, and even what they think of retainers, beacuse some schools are stupid - like mine Also even if it does become infected go back to your piercer and ake advice from them, dont automatically take the piercing out. Oooo try not to buy scabby earrings, like form claires accesories, because they make your ears go green

Haha, I always end up defending the place by default.. But not everyone's ears go green with cheap earrings! I can wear cheap studs for days on end, only changing them out of boredom, not because they hurt or I've changed colour... Though allergies to metals such as nickel can develop at anytime. So even if you've normally been fine with any crap in your ears but they're hurting, try swapping for something like sterling silver, see if that shows an improvement.
I guess that was in defense of cheap ass earrings rather than Claire's, wasn't it? Oh, except for the fact that Claire's sells sterling silver earrings as well as the cheaper stuff.

Hmmmm are you sure you can't use rubbing alcohol? It still kills germs...
I don't know. I just used their solution and then soon afterwards I just stopped and it was okay...The only thing is with your navel pierced, if you keep moving it about it gets irritated and then it can pus.
Blackline jewellery is awesome! Also acrylic is really good... I know loads of people have problems with lots of different metals and I tend to react to skanky plugs/earrings. Changing to Blacklines and acrylics made all these things instantly go away
For tongue with the whole mouthwash thing, make sure its alcohol free. Listerene is not necessarily going to be your best friend! Also with painkillers if you need them, use ibuprofen as its blood thinning (apparently) and so will help with the swelling.

Juno is TSR's resident piercing expert (and helped me fix my baby sister ).
Alcohol is bad for your skin since it dries it out. Have you ever noticed that if you wear too much perfume and wear it all the time, the skin on your neck goes dry and painful? This is what happens around the piercing and it makes it feel awful.
I guess people have to remember that piercings aren't meant to be there, the body doesn't like them.
Argh my sister noticed my tongue today...now my parents will find out soon and hang, draw and quarter me.
