IWLP anyone?

Has anyone taken up a language at the University through IWLP?
I really want to do a language but I'm really shy so I'm kind of scared that I'm going to be forced to speak out in front of the class or something and have my assessments in-class (stupid I know! )
Does anyone know whether students have to speak out loud in the lessons and whether the assessments are done individually with the lecturer? I've emailed the IWLP people and they said all info is on the website but these questions aren't on there!
During the seminars you do have to talk in front of the class. In the oral exam it's just you, the lecturer and somebody else taking notes/doing the tape player.

Hey, I'm thinking about taking up a language but a bit nervous, I haven't studied a language for over 4 years now. And I'm having trouble deciding which language I would want to learn.
Though I would definately do it as a free standing module.

I would guess that you would be expected to speak the language in class as it is essential practice. Although you may be shy about speaking out in front of people it is a really good skill to have and will increase your confidence.

I know I should do it because it'll be a good skill and it would increase my confidence about speaking in front of people....I can't run away from speaking all of the time (although I do try... ) I was thinking of either doing German, Spanish or BSL and I guess with BSL you wouldn't need to speak out loud so that might be a good choice!

He means that if you take it for credit and really mess it up (not that you will but...) then you could end up failing the unit and not gaining the credits for it. You need 120 credits each year to graduate and the language could be 10 credits therefore you're risking 10 credits. You could always take it for interest instead if it bothers you

Credits are what the modules are worth in uni. You have to take about 120 in the year and pass a number of them to go to the next year. I have generally gathered that you need ot pass 100 but it varies with each course I think.
So basically if you get a language as credits if you don't enjoy it or just can't pick it up and you fail you may be stuck retaking a year just because of a language that isn't really relivent to your course.

ill see how it goes, cheers for the advice tho
You should be doing modules that add up to 120 credits and the new rules require you to get 110 credits to pass the year.

Yeah true, if I was you I'd do it for interest in the first semester and then if it clicks take it on for credits in the second. This also means less exams/coursework on a 20 credit module

I am doing Mandarin this year

Reading, listening and writting exams are taken in the class with your class mates and the teacher is in the class. For oral exams, refer to Tominportsmouth's post.

I will agree with you completly there... I somehow managed a B in my a level oral, even though I didn't say much at all relevant to anything, but said what I did in a way it sounded very German... Speak with the right accent, and it will get you very far with that particular language!
