Is this a joke?

It's because it's used in an offensive context.

If I called a southern Asian a "paki bastard", that cannot be considered offensive?!

I just can't understand why people find the word paki which is short for pakistani, offensive!

The word Paki just basically means CLEAN, so why do some ppl take it so seriously and then relate the word to racism?

I'd love to be able to answer, but I dont really know. Its just become accepted as an offensive word I suppose? Just like swear words, i mean, dunno how they became so offensive either. Did someone just pick a random word and decide it was gunna be offensive to everyone?! Enlighten me.

umm.. because people use the word offensively???!!

calling an indian person a Paki is offensive, because it indicates an ignorance on the part of the person saying it, as if all southern asians come formm the same country. people dont say it to be nice...

Even if its used in offensive context, i beleive it just as offensive as saying: "Aussy Bastard"

Paki Bastard = Clean Bastard - obviously the person saying this has a problem with u being clean! - i dont find this offensive.

But the word paki is now associated with being rude. The word bastard is a son born out of marriage isnt it...? well thats not what u mean when ur havin a fight and bein nasty - u call them a bastard to be rude. Exactly what the term paki has become

Troll.

Use the search funtion and you'll find the answer. I've wrote one in the debate forum where the BNP trolled.
It dosen't matter what the word really means, if it is used in an offensive way by a large number of people then it can be considered racist.
Plus, how many people know that 'Paki' means clean? I certainly didn't untill now.

It is used in an offensive context. That's a no brainer.

Paki Bastard = Clean Bastard

Huh? In what language?!

- obviously the person saying this has a problem with u being clean! - i dont find this offensive.

The word nigger also means a socially deprived person. That doesn't mean black people should find it less offensive.

Reply 14

It shouldn't be, but i've never heard it used for any other reason than to cause offence.

Reply 15

I wouldn't have thought in the general context it's offensive, like if you were describing a person from work as the "paki" one...i.e the one of pakistani origin.

I used to get called a paddy or a mick the whole time I lived in England and it never bothered me.....so long as it's not used in an offensive way I can't see the problem with it.

What's a gandhu?!

I don't see how the etymology of the word is relevant. Language evolves. Bitch used to mean a female dog. Now it's a pejorative term for a woman.

And in what language does paki mean clean? Urdu? Arabic? Hindu? What?!

Reply 17

I spose its offensive because it isn't used just as a shortened version of Pakistani (i have a half-Pakistani friend who says she's half Paki - just coz it's shorter) but to all South Asians in general really. Therefore it is saying that all South Asian people are the same, which isn't true? Just guessing, i know that it is offensive, but I'm wondering if thats how it started...

I sometimes get called a Paddy because I am originally from Northern Ireland. I know I am technically a Paddy but I dont like being called it by non paddys. When people call me it though it isnt nasty but still Id rather they didnt. I suppose it is kind of like a skinny girl calling a fat girl fat-thats not on. But other fatties can call each other fat. Know what I mean? Also the same with balck folk calling each other the n word. Its like a bond and white folk arent meant to use it.

Mainly because the word has been hijacked and misused by people using it with intent to offend. Those using it also tend not to bother to check if ther person they're shouting it at is actually Pakistani. But, as it was only ever meant to offend in those instances, I don't think that matters all that much.

It's now just been misused so much that the meaning for people here has changed. Simple.
