Implant

I'm on medication which would interact with the Pill so I can't take it for contraception. I was thinking of having an implant, and just wondering how I can get it done in the UK (namely Scotland since I'm heading there for uni  ). Do I just tell my GP (who I'll register with when I get there) or what?

Sorry I'm just a little clueless about the NHS and all that UK healthcare system. Thx.

hopes <3 is around.

I'm having it put in tomorrow
:afraid:
I told my GP, he said it was a good idea. I called the Clinic cause he couldn't do it at the surgery. I had a consultation, history taken, weighed and measured and what have you and I have an appointment tomorrow.

It's fairly straight forward, though a bit time consuming between stages.

Can you bypass your GP entirely and get it all sorted at somewhere like Brook? I mean, if you have a chat with them, could you decide which method would work best and getting it arranged without the hassle of waiting for a GP appointment? I know you still have to wait, but y'know.

Or would they just be a good starting point?

sorry, I know that makes little sense.

woo.

Yay! Well I'm pretty sure you can hot-tail it to the nearest Brook Advisory Clinic, or NHS Sexual health/GUM clinic.

They're totally free.

My GP couldn't do it anyway - I'm not sure about the number of them that can, but your best bet is easily going to be a sex health clinic either as a hospital branch or a central one in town or something.

Your university info usually has stuff like directions to clinics of the sort. If not - Yellow Pages

what is that?

Hehe! Other way round for me! I made an appointment with my doctor for the very same day. The clinic? had to wait two weeks for consultation and then another 3 for the implant appointment!!!

Lessthanthree: Thank you  I'll see what one is probably going to be quicker

Blissy: Hmm, well I plan to sort it out early in termtime, when everyone's just registered with the doctor. So I figure they might be a bit busier. Doing the childish thing of waiting til I leave home to get it sorted. Oh my. Like I said, I'll see which one'll sort me out quicker.

I'm thinking of having one - let us know how it goes!

it's a special clinic group we have over here - they basically deal with contraceptive and STI/pregnancy issues.

basically a sex clinic :p:

ohhhh i see.

i guess i have to learn a completely new system over there. in hk we just go to a gyno. no GP involved.

*notes down: must go to Brook Advisory Clinic in Edinburgh* :p:

Oh, and stupid question time ...

Will it still all be NHS linked if I go to one of the clinics, or am I effectively going private? Are there any costs involved in it all?

Yeah, shoulda sorted this out a while ago really.

good question. esp. when i already don't have much money there. :frown:

and blissy do let us know how it goes!! (are you doing the armpit one?) i'm hoping it doesn't hurt (or not that much) and stuff...because it's probably my one and only choice of contraception since the pill is out of the question.

Go to your family planning clinic and they'll do one for you. They should do it then and there, it doesn't go to your GP, no one finds out, and they're really nice

Oh, and I believe you can get all forms of contraception free (yes, that includes condoms - the lady at the FPC offered me a bag of them  )

I had to have a consultation first despite being referred by my doctor. I've had it put in this morning - was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. You lie down, she makes a mark and then numbs the area with the anaesthetic. I wasn't looking, but it felt like she injected a bit, moved it out, injected a bit, moved it out and I just jabbered about anything the whole time she was doing it. Then she went to get the implanon thing. It looks a bit like a pregnancy test. Again, I only briefly looked at it. It's long and thin and the means of inserting it and the implant are all one thing. You don't feel pain, only pressure. The needly bit goes in (pressure, not pain) and then *click* and the implant is in, and the needle thing gets taken out. She then lets you have a bit of a poke and bandages you up and sends you on your way.

Hurrah! No more pills (or babies!) .. and maybe no periods
Let's hope I react well and don't bleed too much *fingers crossed*

How long does that implant last then??

Reply 14

norplan used to last 5 but its not used now.
i had mind done only throught the brook centre. i went in on the thought of having injection at the time and they gave me leaflet. then a woman talked for a while about which ones are best and which ones i couldn't have cause of medical issues. then i came back 1 week later and it was put in. lol

Brook is great lols

They did tell me tho that some people blled non stop. also my sisters friends body rejected the implant all together and had to go into hospital and have it removed. but i think thats pretty rare.
you just have to go for a check up in 3 months
