AS Art surfaces theme - any ideas?

Alright guys,
Just started the fine art AS course today and we got started working on ideas on a theme we got given for our first assesment. As said in the title, the theme is surfaces. We got given a few obvious starting points like decaying surfaces, textures, patterns and broken surfaces but i want to go a bit deeper and work on a better viewpoint of surfaces than those.

If you have done art you know that you can interpret things in any way so i'm wondering whether anybodys got any bright ideas which i could maybe use as a starter. I've thought of one possiblity which is fronts which people put on, to hide their personality. You see the outer surface but their inner surface is much different. You see what i mean by interpreting the word in anyway.

So any ideas?

Cheers

Facade's, thats not a bad idea.

If you were to do that I would do a sculpture, it would be much easier than a painting.

this sounds like one of those things where u take ur piece of paper, and using ur crayon on its side rub over it til u get a nice picture underneath...

but unfortunately, being AS Art, i guess not, and 'fraid i dont have many ideas, im not an arty person

I'd do something like what you said.. facades etc.. but make it personal.. think about yourself and if you ever act differently around different people/hide certain feelings etc..
I did AS art last year, and my teacher was always saying to make your work personal..you get much better marks...and also the project will be a lot more interesting! With a project like this you might not want to 'reveal' your true self through your artwork or whatever, but that in turn becomes another issue to look at..
We did a project last year on identity, and I felt really strongly about my identity being perceived by others as just a physical thing.. and the pressures I feel as a female to conform to the 'skinny stereotype'.. so my final piece involved a series of quite revealing photos of my body.. and when I handed it in.. I did feel slightly embarassed yeah.. but I learnt most from that project and got my best mark!
So basically I just suggest make whatever you decide to do, personal to yourself.. you could use the idea of surfaces.. and think of your skin as a surface.. do some observational drawings and stuff.. ahh I'm rambling.. but you get the idea!

lol i had that theme at gcse and i did 'urban surfaces' and made some weird rooftop thing. most people did reflective surfaces, or water but the 'emotional' thing is good if you wanted to be clever
