Just to make a point here,

Becca said something about Bailey college formals being free since they are more often (for example, Castle has 2 formals a week whilst Trevs has one every fortnight)....however, must just point out that I've never heard of ANY college charging people to go to formal. Trevs certainly don't anyway! OK yeah so you have to sign up for it and if you don't sign up in time then you have to go to early formal (where you go to dinner about 30mins early, don't have to wear smart clothes, but get pretty much the same meal as they'd get in formal) :smile:


Our formals are £2 for livers in and £5 for livers out. The college charges us for the extra hours they have to pay the staff for.

But at least Aidans formal sign up is online, at Hatfield you have to go into college and queue up-which for livers out is a bit of an annoyance(but well worth it as Hatfield formals are brilliant) :cool:

I should also say that durham is one of the most expensive unis to live in, it has expensive rooms, and ents which come think and fast are expensive


Durham has one of the most reasonable priced catered halls. My mates are paying nearly £5000 this year at birmingham uni for catered and get this, they only get meals 5 days a week. They still have to buy food on top of this fee. You might aswell go to london I said to one of my mates, at least they can jusify that fee since a room in high holborn is about that price per year, or just a bit over. Sheff is also £120 a week, so durham is reasonable in terms of price. Its the cheapest uni that I appiled to.

Yeah, but at other unis you can choose to live in a small/shared/crappy room and pay less. At Durham you pay the same whether you're in a massive, lovely single, or in one that's all of the above.

--Free for all liver ins who sign up
--About 80% of all liver ins will be able to go if they want to
--Liver outs do pay, I think £3, but Liver-ins get priority (Sign up for liver-ins opens on Monday, for liver-outs and guests it opens on Wednesday, formal is on the Thursday)
--You can take whatever alcohol you like...as long as the wine bottles don't have corks in them! I always take a bottle of vodka and a bottle of lemonade :biggrin:
