Wearing glasses.....

hi, im 19, and i've discovered that my vision (short-sightedness i.e. cannot really see things far away) has worsened within 1 year in uni - which is very peculiar . I've gone from 125 degrees to 150 degrees and now got a new pair of glasses - its not a huge difference but take into consideration ive been on 125 degrees for like 4 years, and suddenly one year in uni it shoots up 25 degrees. Please read on...it's shorter than it seems ...........

I can read and use the computer without my glasses, but need them to drive, watch TV, and see whiteboard - coz im shortsighted. My question is:

Shall I wear my glasses at all times regardless of the task to prevent further power in my eyes, or shall I wear them only when necessary to prevent further power, or does it not matter because its all just genetics?(by power, I mean the increase/worsening degree of vision)

One optician told me I should wear them all the time to prevent further power as there is still a possibility of body growth at age 19, yet another one told me just wear them when necessary as getting further power or not is down to genetics at this age. Then I hear other theories from friends/relatives such as:
- not wearing glasses when necessary will strain your eyes and make them worse
- wearing glasses all the time will make your eyes adapted to them so you will only gain power and not lose power (losing power is actually possible!)
- wearing glasses seems to make vision worse
- just avoid excess use of the computer and your vision will not deepen

One theory I was quite intrigued upon that I saw on a documentary was: at *some point whilst using the computer you should look/stare out the window and focus on something very far, for a short *period of time to prevent damage to your eyes. Has anybody else heard of this? and if so, *what are the specific time periods?

my dad's an opthalmologist...
he reccommends me wearing glasses all the time...
he said that your vision tends to correct itself to some extent later on...
he knows more than i do, so i just take his advice...

I don't want this to sound rude, but I really don't recommend you ask that kind of question to a bunch of students on the The Student Room!

If two opticians have disagreed, ask a third, and a fourth and a fifth. The more opinions you get the better your decision will be.

Good luck.

Yes wear them all the time. In the space of one year my eye sight corrected itself from -2.0 in one eye and -1.75 in the other to -1.75 in both eyes...

I also wear contacts which may have helped i'm not sure though.

Hey thanks alot!! Can you ask him for some more advice? like how to prevent further power in the eyes? Maybe, diet helps? Also, does he know anything about these hard lenses that corrects your vision by adjusting your cornea shape? coz I cant seem to find them in SpecSavers but I read about them from a mag....

Yeah I know what u mean, but we have some really clever people on TSR  and most probably wear glasses anyways.

Interesting that. What prescription r ur glasses now? I think my left is slightly stronger than my right but my glasses are prescribed the same for both eyes. Contacts seem ideal, is it ok to take a nap with contacts on? I know u cant sleep with them on unless they are the type that lets oxygen in.

Well, that's a nice presumption

I'm not sure if there's any concrete evidence that wearing glasses the whole time causes your vision to either improve or deteriorate - most of the change in eyesight in your teens is due to your growth spurt causing things to change shape slightly. I used to only wear glasses when I needed to, but over the last year or so at uni it's basically moved to wearing them (or contacts) all the time. I need them for lectures, for cycling (I can't drive without them, so feel safer wearing them to cycle too), for working on the computer and for watching TV, so that pretty much covers most things! As for going out, I quite often wear contacts so that I can see people and don't lose them and have to wander around squinting in clubs. My prescription has been the same now for about 5 years.

As for contacts, it depends what kind you get. Napping can be ok, although you might need some refresher drops afterwards. You can get gas-permeable contacts which you can sleep in and leave in for a month at a time, but they are quite expensive.

I'm similar to you I think... I wear my glasses for driving, watching TV and reading the board, but not at other times.

Yeah same here. But if I'm at home watching tv in the evening or something, I tend to just walk around in them cos I can't be bothered to take them off.
i suggest that you dont wear glasses all the time
try to keep without them if you can
there are many theories which suggest that glasses shouldnt be worn and if you dont wear glasses, its better for your eyes as when you have your glasses on, your eyes are more rigid and less freely moveable, causing more strain, worsening eyesight...

glasses are bad for you... have you every heard anyone say... i was -3.00 diopters last year and guess wot, now im -2.25!
THIS NEVER HAPPPENS

Glasses are like a crutch... They are temporary but dont prevent...

Best way to mentain eyesight is to do loads of eye relaxation...
Ps. there is a thing online EYE Program... Its 50 quid BUT it works... suggest u to check it out...
or look for BATES METHOD online and you can get a free ebook...

yes, this is what is often refered to the 10:10:10 rule
It suggests that every 10 mins, you focus on an oject 10-15 feet away for 10-20 seconds

just in case ur wondering how i know stuff even though im 14 is that im a high myope (-6.00 both eyes) whose parents are always talkin abut this ****
Can somebody please explain to me what all these numbers mean? I can't seem to find any answers on Google.

I had an eye test yesterday and need to go back and collect my glasses early next week. On my prescription it says "Sphere: -150" for both eyes. Is this the same as -1.5? And is this amount of correction regarded as mild, moderate or high etc?

Thanks

As a slight aside (from a fellow glasses wearer)... I often wonder what people with poor vision did prior to lenses becoming common place [thinking at least pre- 15thC here].
Maybe I am not reading the right history books because I can't recall reading anything about this type of phenomena which must have been there!

my op says wearing glasses has no effect on worsening/bettering of vision. he said tyat near-point stress eg too much computer can worsen sight as the stain makes the eye adapt weirdly
i'm short sighted by -3.5 and i do not wear my glasses all the time. despite my poor vision, i am able to see without my glasses for simple every day tasks, such as reading, writing, washing up, using a key to open the door, walking on the street.

instead, i only wear glasses when i need to far distance read writing and signs. i dont like being dependant on glasses.

I think I'm about -6.0 in one eye and -6.5 in the other, but I can't remeber which is which. I wear them all the time, esp in the swimming pool, as one time I starting talking to a complete stranger who looked at bit like my friend
Hey people!

I hear ya ll completely! I ve been wearing my glasses for 3 years. My left eye is weaker than my right. My vision is getting worse, and basically I don't understand could this have a link from genetics? I realise that during the teenage years it is "suppose to weaken" and then stabalise. I am the only one in my family that has to wear glasses. Is this the case for anyone else? I mean my g.parents don't need them not even for like reading.
Hmmm I guess whatever is going to happen, is gunno happen. I'm booked in for a contact lens trial? Bit worried? Can anyone tell my their experiences? Are there any side effects of wearing contacts?

Appreciate any responses.

I gave up on contact because I coud not be bothered with the hassle. I had to have rigids which meant that if anything- dust, mascara etc.- got into my eye then my eye would water so much that I would have to 'pop' them out. And sometimes my eye was irritated that I couldn't get the damn thing back in! Other lenses may be better though.

Re: trial. Watch out for that yellow dye. You may want to wipe/ blow your nose after to save yourself from potential embarassment.

I haven't tried contacts. Anybody know if people as short sighted as me can wear them?
