infected piercing... grr

i got my ears pierced nearly 6 weeks ago (indeed, the 6 week healing period is supposedly over on wednesay). i went to a reputable salon, had proper earrings put it, haven't touched my ears, have cleaned them twice daily with a funny solution thing and they've been fine, for 5 and a half weeks.... all clean and happy and looking like normal piercings which i barely notice.

but then, yesterday, one ear started to hurt... and this morning it's hello swollen earlobe weeping pus!!

i just thought i'd share my annoyance...grrrr! anyone else had this happen? and, whilst we're at it, anyone got any tips on ways to make it better (other than washing it with earcare solution a lot more).. e.g how many days/weeks extra should i give the ear to heal?

Sometimes it just, well, happens.

When you say reputable, what sort of place was it exactly..?

a beauty salon recommended by goldsmiths (as in the posh jeweller's). they've been fine for nearly 6 weeks so i don't think i can blame the piercer!! *sigh* it's just a pain in the bum (well... more the ear, actually) so i just feel like whining about it.

Without knowing the extent of the infection, I'd be inclined to say pay the doctors a visit to be on the safe side. But if others know better, then go ahead and advise

yup, i'm a good girl, i did it all. see, my right ear is perfectly fine, i can't even feel the piercing in it... i could turn the stud around all day without even noticing. it's just the one ear, lol! i know i sleep on my left side so i guess i could have squished it while kipping or something... arr i dunno.

Hmm.. Beauty salons are never as reputable as a piercing salon. Think along the lines of claire's with that one... They just do it as a sideline to make more cash rather than bothering to be the experts. That said, that doesn't necessarily equal infection. Like I said, it could be a whole world of things. It can happen.

could you be allergic to the metal maybe? Any hair or anything wrapped around and caught near the piercing?

And what exactly did they give you to clean it with?

Hmm.. Y'know who we need... Juno.

well, as far as salons around here go, that's probably the best one. there's a funny little hippy shop which does piercings/tattoos round here, which i decided wasn't a good idea, and the only other places that do it are jeweller's and hairdressers. so i trust the piercer... it was clean etc and i got all the lectures and the leaflets and i got to sit on a little hospital bed style thing and everything.

i doubt it's the metal because i checked with the piercer and it is hypoallergenic stuff suitable for first piercings... also only one of the ears is infected. my hair appears to be in the right place, and they gave/sold me something called studex ear care solution.

i'm not actually really bothered about what caused it... it was probably something i did, considering the timescale, and the fact that my other ear is fine. i just wondered if it had happened to other people so long after having the piercing, and wondered if how long it would be worth leaving the original piercing in to let it heal.

and, yes, if it doesn't get better in a couple of days then i will go and see a doctor about it.

I've always been told that it's best to leave the stud in to avoid dragging the infection through and seeing a doctor to get something to clear it up. But that might just be head office covering their arses...

Believe me if you go to see a doctor he/she will just say get rid of it! mine was infected for ages and thats all he said! edit: well most doctors will!!

ive found that mine tends to get infected if there is a hair caught around the earing/peircing which you cant really see, makesure u check. If its not that just use some surgical spirit that i was recommended and it clears up any infection after a while. But it does hurt!!!

Not necessarily, you can clear up the infection while leaving the stud in. GPs don't all work the same as eachother.

Course, if it was the jewellery that caused the infection in the first place, then s/he probably has a point..

sometimes if u sleep on it it gets infected - i dno y i think it just distresses the piercing. ive got 6 piercings in each ear all of which got infected. just keep cleaning it itl get better soon enough

yeh, i don't really want to go see a doctor straightaway when it might clear up on its own. i'm just gonna clean it lots and see how it goes for a few days... i don't really want to waste my GP's time if i can help it, lol.

just keep bathing it, when mine got slightly infected i put sleepers in, since studs dont 100% agree with me.

there little hoops, even thickness all the way around, so your ear hole can sit on any part of the ring. Tend to be hinged, great for after your ears have healed or if stubs arnt argeing with you.

you may have just snagged it a bit and tore a little bit of skin. Happened with my nose when I first got it for a few weeks.
Make sure you keep the area clean; Be careful when washing your hair you don't want shampoo irritating it. Don't touch the piercing unless needed and make sure that your hands are clean.

For cleaning the peircing I always use a sea salt water solution (teaspoon into a glass of warm water) And then wash it with just water after to stop it drying out. I don't know much about what is actually in the ear care solutions, have used them before and they were ok...but I'v never seen a peircing studio recommend it.

Have you checked that the back of the stud isn't too tight? I had a problem with that once. Wasn't great.
mine have had repeated infections but that was because i accidentally tugged/banged my ear. they clear up in awhile as long as you keep them clean I guess. I use alcohol cleaning solution but i think salt water will work just fine... to keep the bacteria out.
just wash it a bit more
use salt in water its just as good lols.
i had mine done first time at a tiny tattoo shop for a fiver
the bloke was smoking a fag at the time . . . and i never had any problems - no infection whatsoever

anyway, they closed up because i didn't wear any earrings for a while
i had them re-holed today at a posh jewellers
sods law sais they get infected
