Yes but no qualification.. how sad is that? Why would you want a qualification for mentoring first years?

I'm doign this mentoring scheme thing, it runs up until May! Hopefully I get someone decent.

What are all your reasons for taking this up? I know why I am....it is purely UCAS driven...I suppose it would be good to help someone else but it is helping me more!!!! (i hope!)
yeah I got to start this today...however we actually do have to see our 'charges' as they put it on a regular basis or it cannot be placed on our UCAS forms :frown: xoxo

When I was in sixth form, we need to mentor year 7 students. That activity goes towards an ASDAN universities award to accredit extra curricular activities, citizenship, etc...

I would have to loved to have done that, but I went to college. Shame.

my reasons for doing it, i thought it would actually be really kool to do it... sad i know, and plus looks good on your uni form thing, and if you get a qulaification will look good on job applications im guessing! and.... i dunno im thinkin it will be a laugh

I got a letter for doing that today... such a funny letter. Especially the last sentence 'you could be the most important thing in this year 7's life' and how you will 'worry for her' haha.

i'm mentoring year 7 pupils at the moment, but not getting an award for it... I don't mind about that though, it's quite fun! They are so innocent :p:

Im at college to this is the first i've heard of these sort of things

I didn't do that but I did a reading buddies course. It was fun
Is anyone doing paired reading as well? when you help children become more fluent and confident with literacy? xoxo

I'm gonna start metoring 'gifted and talented' kids at a primary school soon. I dunno who yet cos they're still trying to set it up, but my friend has two children she has to teach GCSE science to. Thats GCSE SCIENCE to PRIMARY SCHOOL children. There's also a boy trying to teach himself Italian who wants someone to help him. I never knew anyone who did anything like this at my primary school. It seems kind of weird, at that age they should be playing and having fun - what use is GCSE sciecne and Italian to them when they're below 11???

Anyways, hopefully it'll be fun. I'm just worried that they'll be cleverer than me! :p:

Um.. no. We're sufficiently co-ordinated enough to go and speak to the mentees ourselves, make human conversation and sort out problems using our own initiative. What an odd school you must go to.

Why would you put this on a personal statement? How do you link it to university life/academia?

i mean the talk was showing different ways of aproaching your mentor kiddies and how to focus and handle their problems...

How does your skool do it?

If your going into the fields of care, this is why u wud put it down on ur personal statement...

My school selects mentors, pairs you up with mentees who are best suited to your personality, and quickly tell you your role - be a friendly face, talk to them, if they have any problems sort them out. Simple as that, the rest is left down to us, and occasionally we meet to discuss major problems and how to deal with them. It doesn't require training!!

I understand now about the personal statement - I thought you were saying it was useful for other non-related subjects as well and was wondering how I could use it.
