In maths exams (in general), do the examiners consider it an acceptable method of working things out, by firstly writing down an answer, and working backwards to prove the question was wrong?

Not quite sure what you mean here. Do you mean proving that a question was wrong on an exam paper? Could you give an example perhaps?
