I think I am starting a new thread that should attract a few responses. I am very bored at home, at the moment. I am applying for some work at a number of Law firms but I have no idea how this will turn out. And with only months to go till starting Uni I am at least 4 stone or so overweight (yes fat I suppose!) not helped by the Christmas period - but then I am a vegan - go figure! Anyway I am still awaiting the replies of four unis - LSE, UCL, King's, and Durham - for Law - but I have unconditional offers from SOAS and Essex for Law. I do hope other users will respond to this thread and share their feelings about what can be a difficult period in someone's life especially if it is enforced by missing offers the first time round! Thanks

Whats this got to do with you being a lard arse?

Why dont you take up a sport? It will be hard to begin with but its worth it in the end. Sports are very rewarding and you will feel a lot better about yourself.

Look at this time as an opportunity to widen your skills, knowledge and experience. If I was you, I would plan to work for halve the time and spend the other halve going travelling or something like that. Whatever you do, try to use the time constructively.

It has been three years since I left college and am now planning to go to university this september. I feel a lot more mature and ready for university than I would have been right out of college.

I'm on a gap year at the moment working and i don't particularly enjoy it. It's work experience and something to put on a CV but i feel that i should be travelling and doing exciting stuff instead of being stuck in an office.

Perhaps you can take up a sport or go to a gym if you're bothered about your weight (as you mentioned it you must be)

there's not much more you can do with regard to your offers, so it's probably not worth worrying about as you do have 2 back-up plans. Perhaps you should pursue different avenues for work experience or put the pressure on the law firm so you know where you stand and you don't waste a whole year doing nothing - which won't look good.

You seem rather touchy this evening Mafoo! Do you need some relief?
Yes i do, i would like a nice lot of positive rep for helping some Nirvana loving guy who wants to be like Kurt Cobain, but just cant even spell his name correctly... Kurdt, tut tut  and he wants to do law, rotfl. I hope i have made a difference to his life.

As for the relief... well i dont really like being so touchy anywhere near such a twat so which of these would you prefer: Prague, Venice, Brussels, Dublin or Paris?

Well....shall we start in Prague, then i fancy a night or two in Venice. Then to Paris we go, and watch the sunset over Paris at the Sacre Coeur.

A few of my friends took gap years and all spent their time at home, improving their PlayStation scores. Me? I went to university and I think I'm much better off. Gap Years in my opinion are a waste of time (unless you genuinely want to DO things)

Nice reply mate, but about your gap year i would definitly go traveling... i suggest that one of the best things you could do would be to go inter-railing around Europe, with a friend if possible but on your own would still be great, especially if you speak more than one language.

Personally i went to Italy and to Paris... but that was just on occasions to spend time with my girlfriend. Otherwise i worked all year. Year it is great experience and you get good money, but you have the rest of your life to do that. Go and absorb the beauty of our continent, you remember more when you are young, and have more energy.

As for those who have not decided to have a gap year or not, i entirely agree, dont rush into uni and work have some fun while you can, life is short... i think if you do have a gap year it also makes your time at uni better, you are more mature and certainly more experienced. Uni is supposed to be the best time of your life.

I'd like to go to the arctic. I might just quit work and try and set up some business so i don't have to work again, just go to university stay for the party, and leave never having to work. Life'd be sweet. But in seriousness i'll probably work until June and then go travelling until september. A word of advice for anyone thinking of taking a gap year, plan it before-hand.

Listen, maybe I am being harsh on myself as I am 15 stone with a 6ft 1" frame but I was this weight when I was a prop-forward for my school rugby team exactly a year ago. What can I say I am a perfectionist and would like to be a little lighter but I am not a gross lard-arse.

As for the spelling of "Kurt" it is in reference to Cobain's stage alter-ego which he came up with himself. And no I am not a porn-searching lad with a small penis and have no hang-ups about my physique other than my little beer belly. Anyway this was meant to be positive thread not a board used for abuse by those totally bereft of any intuition or apparent wisdom.

Thank you to those of you who made some constructive suggestions with regard to travelling and for sharing some of your gap year experiences. Pity must be felt for those who were a little immature today.

Anyway the reason I am particularly upset is that I am still waiting for 4 universities to recognise my undoubted talents! Enough of the knit-picking and snide remarks and I look forward to the next installment of messages.

Just to cheer you up. I already had my grades etc when I applied for uni this year. I'm a postgrad but I had to apply for some courses through UCAS I didnt get all my offers through until May.

I eat loads of fruit and vegetables. I don't eat that much bread and I have never really liked eating dairy products and as a result my allergies, this summer just gone, were non-existent. It means that you can never feel full for too long and when you break wind it doesnt smell. Also your stamina goes up exponentially when doing excercise or other things etc. Veganism is gr8 and I recommend everyone to do it!!

I was just wonderin......if your are so much better than the rest of us who are 'totally bereft of any intuition or apparent wisdom', y r tryin 2 prove urself? ie TOO MUCH INFORMATION! Surely if u were so wise and wonderful u'd actually b DOING something with your gap year instead of describing your physical appearance on a message forum.

Matt, thank you for ur congrats on the offers. By the way you have got to stop making silly assumptions about my person because as you correctly point out you have never met me. And could you please stop imagining that I have a small willy because (1)anyone would think you are suffering from the inferiority of a small willy (2) you are making me feel uncomfortable. Other than that you're doing fine mate

Sue your cynicism is very cutting. Actually I am trying (but failing) to be facetious. Do not mistake having a laugh for having an over-inflated view of myself. The fact that I am even on a Gap Year telling you guys I am miffed should tell you that I am being self-deprecating and that I am not that conceited in reality
