Can any first years and above give an indication of what security is like on campus especially for our possesions such as laptops/mobiles.

Any Experiences?

I've been told that the cleaners are the biggest thieves on campus.

Cleaners? Thats bad :frown:

I heard that 1 in 4 students were victim to property crime. Thats loads!!! I just sorted out my insurance but it doesnt cover my phone so I'm going to have to be uber careful with it, especially since my previous phone was stolen by a 'friend' a few months ago.

I'm quite intrigued as to what security is like aswell.

I would think it depends on the campus and the halls. I hear that some buildings have great security and universities focus on it, Others lack it. Never heard the cleaner thing though.

All I can say is get some decent student insurance for your possesions (E.g Try Saxon Direct, Cover4students, Endsleigh), Ones that cover 'Walk-in' theft especially. Then if the worst does happen at least you will get money back to cover the cost.

Security is mostly up to you or varies hall to hall.

Lock your doors, your windows. Get insured.

Laptops - get a lock for them (also known as a "Kensington Lock"). They deter most thieves and the company behind them give $1500 if the lock has been battered open and your laptop gone (since the lock does leave evidence if forced open).

That said, a very professional and experienced thief will bypass all your measures - but frankly, they're operating in the richer parts of Belgravia, Kensington, Chelsea and Mayfair. Not student halls.

Not Endsleigh... know too many people with experiences with them.

Any firm that markets THAT aggressively... and mysteriously is VERY hard to claim off, oh dear.

Any policy that has 'preferred supplier agreements' is best avoided too.

Yeah, Endsliegh are expensive. They were twice as much as Saxon for me, and gave less cover.

I heard bad things about them, Especially that they were the most expensive of the bunch But The advertise so much with UCAS.. Gah.

Unfortunately I can even get insurance yet intill I get my accomdation through.. ah its frustrating.

My parents put me on the house insurance because they said it would cover my student accomadation as well for only an extra £20

Ive got Endsleigh cover up to £3000 included in my hall fees, so that'll do for me. Ive checked the terms to make sure they cover all I need, and im happy.

I got cover from Endsleigh worth £2500 + £550 on my latop + lots of accident cover and outside halls and vacationc over all for £61pa. I thought that wasnt bad. Plus there very well known and really really helpful over the phone.

Endsleigh wouldn't bloody leave me alone.

I got an awesome plan for security. I'm going to use my webcam and hook it up to my laptop. Setup motion detection and as soon as someone enters my room the images are sent to my email and computer, and then i can sue them personnally and it won't affect my no claims

So you better watch out - jOnNy BoRrEll is watching

You just have to be careful, i plan to lock my laptop away, if not lock at least keep it out of sight, and i got insurance for my mobile from phones 4 you that way if someone wants to mug me for it they can have it...

I was wondering about having something to lock all my important documents/passport/laptop etc. away when I go out and leave my room. Do you think most halls give some drawer that can be locked or something? There's little point in buying a little box that can be locked as that makes it more tempting for crooks and also easy to steal...

I did think about gettin a small safe like in the hotels but like you said they could just pick it up and walk off unless your prepared to stick holes to fix them in into your room and lose your deposit!!

I would suggest getting a small money box to keep small items and of course money and ensure your insurance covers you upto £100 for theft of personal money. Saxon insurance does that for me as it is included in my accomodation cost.

I still haven't arranged my insurance!

I was going to be put on my mum's insurance and it would have been free but wouldn't have covered my laptop or covered my posessions when I come home....

For this to be covered it would have been £80!Shocker!

I was thinking of going with Endsleigh but maybe not now.

nah, in our halls last year the cleaners were really trustworthy. apparently some international student left 400 quid lyig around and the cleaner gave it to a warden so she could tell the student off for leaving all that much money lying around. nothing got stolen from our halls.
there was a thing about random ppl walking into halls tho. i think some1 got attacked in a different hall nearby...wen ure leaving or going into ure halls make sure no1 comes in with you, or u know it's someone who actually lives there.
