Maiden Castle Sports Centre

do u need to pay to be able to use the studios/ fitness suites, etc or does the use of these facilities come under the £105 that we pay for something to do with sport?

im getting membership for marys gym but wouldnt mind going to the fitness suites at the big sports centre to see what they are like... i know marys has a concept 2 ergo which is good - but u cant go in there and use the equipment unless somebody else is in there which is annoying

I think the Maiden Castle gym is extra on top of your sports card, which seems a bit crap to me.

wow - more money???

i would have thought the £105 might have included us being allowed to use the gym, etc at the big sports centre... that is quite bad really

anybody know where 'team durham' circuits take place - when and where... and can anybody go?

I think to be on 'team Durham' you have to be on one of the uni sports teams, so if you try out for a uni team and get on then you'll probably be told about those circuits.

oh right, okay then

i might try for the womens lightweigt rowing squad - not sure though... seems to involve loads of training, more than im doing now/ ever done before, might just stick to college rowing im thinking

i do want to do circuits though so hopefully marys boatclub will do them/ somewhere will do them

to use the maidan castle gym it's around £100 a year, it's huge and really posh. You pay for your sports card to fund all the teams, the running of maiden castle and pitchs and stuff

any uni sport involves huges amounts of training rowing especially, with college sport u'd train a couple of times a week i think, we need dobbs to tell u, he rows

We already had a whole thread about rowing with me and Siobhan so I'm not explaining it all again :p:

And on the topic about college gyms where some/most require you to be in there with another person it's so that if you injure yourself there is someone there to get help rather than you just lie in agony until you die  - and it's not that bad as you'll always be able to find someone to go with you! Plus at busy times like just before breakfast and then in the evening there will most likely always be people in there.

It's not that you have to find someone to be with you, it's just that you're not allowed to use the gym alone!
Does anyone know if people actually use the Castle gym? I read somewhere that we supposedly have one, but I want to know if it's decent, or if I'm going to be shelling out another 100 pounds. (I just realised that I have no way to make the pound sign on my computer! )

Team Durham sessions run most afternoons and evenings and vary between circuits, spped and agility sessions. Each sports club (provided they are a Team Durham club) can book however many places on a particular evening if they like. I think, but dont quote me on this, that non-TD members can go to these sessions but they have to pay extra.

To become a Team Durham member you usually have to be in ranked in the top 20%ish of your sport within Durham although this is fairly flexible.

However, the whole setup could very easily change this year as there is a big upheaval and changeabout within TD and DUAU.

You should get an email about it all early in the term or otherwise come along to the Sports Freshers Fair (which I will continue to plug mercilessly!) at the Three Tuns Hotel

I got a letter this morning asking me to send a cheque for ££126 English pounds££ for the Team Durham Sports clothing which includes tracksuits ect. This is apparently compulsory when doing my course and therefore im gonna be skint before i even arrive!

Oh. Maybe then.

But still, why would you need Team Durham clothing? That seems a bit annoying, did they tell you ahead of the course that you would need to purchase these? As technically they can't just come now and say it's compulsory for your course....as this reveals hidden costs which you didn't previously know about!

I would phone them up and enquire about this.....it seems unfair, especially if you can't afford to pay £130 or whatever for a tracksuit!

While it seems unfair and is probably technically not compulsary you might feel a bit left out if everyone has one and you don't. Also in chem they reveal stuff you have to buy like lab coat, goggles + other random stuff

I think they should make people aware of these hidden costs!! I was actually really annoyed last summer when I found out I had to buy a suit, I didn't think I would have to just because it's not something I really considered. Things like this need to be made clear to students beforehand, not just at Durham, at all universities!

fortunatly I alredy had a suit but I found a dinner suit to be a good purchase, it may be expensive in the short term but in the long term it pays off. And yes it would be a good idea to tell people before but I considered it thankfully
