Teacher training clothes...

Ok, so I'm starting my PGCE soon and I'm starting to panic over what I should wear when I'm on my school placements.

I have two weeks in a primary school starting next week and then will be spending a lot of the time in a seondary school.

Is there any particualr sort o thing I should be wearing?

Would I need to wear a suit or would a shirt and tie be enough or the secondary school?

How about the primary school? I remember my primary school to be a pretty informal place. I think I'm going to phone the Primary School up tomorrow as I also have on or two other questions I want to ask.

Also, could you suggest what colours of shirts and ties might look OK....I went round the shops today and saw way too many to know what is best....

I think maybe it'd be a good idea to wear a suit at first for the secondary school until you know what kind of standard of dress is expected. It's better to be to smart than too casual.

My brother is a primary teacher - he just wears suit trousers and a formal shirt. I guess it's not practical to be in a suit if you're going to be supervising PE or art lessons with small children...

I think it's pretty simple for a guy. Suit trousers and a shirt and tie are formal enough fot teachers. At your primary school placement wear dark coloured shirts so it doesn't matter too much if you get grubby! And take spare clothes for PE lessons.

Yeah a lovely smart shirt-don't hold back on colour variation with black or dark grey trousers, a tie to match the shirt and nice smart shoes like this
Thanks peopl for you help.

I'm just about to phone the school up as I have a few questions, so I'll check then with them too.

I think I'll hve a bit of shopping to do this weekend...not sure if I should get another suit yet though (I have one, but I always feel a bit too formal in it when wearing it...not sure why...)...I might wait and see a while...but I saw a rather nice one at a good price yesterday....so I don't want to miss out on it.

Also a couple of new shirts and ties are needed...I only have one or two already that are suitable (my others are too casual or too light... )

And troisers....I could actually do witha pair or two of formal trousers....I have those from my suit....maybe those from another suit, so I'll get another pair or two.

As for those shoes in the link...they are nice, but I don't have the money to stretch to another pair of shoes yet....not until I get my loan and training burasry at least, which won't be for another 2 and a half weeks...

I hope that this helps. Both of my parents are teachers and one is a PGCE lecturer so i've asked him about this before. You're on the right lines with the tie. He said to make a good impression you should always wear one. You won't need a full on 'black tie' suit, he suggested 'smart casual' as a guidance and by that he actually means, trousers and a shirt. Some schools don't like you wearing jeans so i'd stick to a pair of more 'formal' trousers.

Colour wise, if you can get a darker shirt with a lighter tie, that tends to work. Blue with purple/pink goes. Blue's a pretty safe colour generally. Solid black and white might make you look like you're off to a party so steer clear of that combination, although a white shirt with a black patterned tie would be fine. Try not to wear the same tie/shirt combination as the school (ie. if they have a white shirt with a black patterned tie...don't do it) or you may run the risk of being mistaken for a pupil (unlikely but possible....and working in a secondary school any chance to avoid embarassment is likely to be a good thing.)

Oh and my tip, would be, if you're really lacking in funds, find a primark...even if there isn't one close (it'll be worth the train fare by the amount you save on clothes) By having a few different outfits you can ensure that regardless of however messy you'll be at the end of the day, you'll have a new £6 shirt waiting for you in your wardrobe fresh for the next day!

By being formal to begin with, seeing what other men wear there, asking around and adjusting the dress code accordingly you should be able to fit right in. You sound like you're on the right lines so Good Luck with it all!
When I was doing AS Psychology we had a student teacher in our class and he always wore a suit and tie.

Laurenlauren has given some good advice
