hi everyone,

I am currently student studying Maths and Economics, at the University of Liverpool, and got an avg of 83% in the first year and 81% in the second year. A Level results were AAA... Do yo think its worth applying for M Phil in Economics at cambridge, or would it just be a waste of time, as the word is that it is extremely competitive to get into cambridge.. would it be better to just concentrate on another lower tier university, or do you think that I will stand a chance..

Any sort of advice is widely appreciated...

You definitely stand a chance. Those types of averages are not that common, as far as I know, so that should allow for some stellar letters of recommendation. Also, Maths+Econ is the ideal undergraduate course.

Hi,
Just wanted to know whether doing a project is gonna give u an added advantage when applying for a good masters course. I have this option of doing a project intead of a 15 credit module in my thrid year, but I actually dont wanna, cos it will give me a chance to study another subject instead. Besides I have heard that projects could really muck your average up if you get a grumpy moderator.. :frown:

Then don't do it.

Project would be good for a Phd later, but not necessarily for a master.

For a project you need enthusiasm more than anything. You don't have to be a genius to do one, you just need to have something that interests you a lot (to the point of obsession if you want to do a real good project) and spend a lot of time on it. Of course if you happen to be extremely clever then you could probably do it easily with less work, but most people aren't, and even then, with too little enthusiasm someone less clever with more interest will do better.

thnx... i finally... went through with not doing da project.. chose another 4th year module, which might luk good on my transcript.... just a small additional q.. does a referee always have to be a person with a Dr. title.. I'v got a lecturer who know me very well since he has taught me in 2 modules.. but his uni profile says he aint a doctor yet.. :frown:.. but im sure he'l give me a good reference since i did well in his modules..

Are you sure? It is not usual for Phd students to be lecturers already.

And if he is a Phd student, then I would advise against using him/her as a referee. A good reference from a not so well know person is definitely better than a generic one from a well known prof, but a grad student as a referee, I don't know.
