But what happens when you get to year 2 and have no experince of working at that level with that amount of reading?
Reply 4262
Ask most people. Seriously the level of reading varies gratly epending on who you are. I tend to read lots in the areas I'm very interested in but not a huge amount elsewhere.

Not much really. Its still perfectly possible to get a first (or at least a 2:1) without any reading at all.

Mainly in sciences I might add.
Yes but I study law, or should I say I read law.

NB I managed to get 66% in 1st year without ever going to the library. Ever.

That said I got 67% last year and did a fair amount of reading, although managed to not read a fair few core texts.....

I would disagree with that actaully. The only reason that scientists don't visit the library as often is because we have less essays and the like. We are talking about reading that is extra to that, or not directly connected to any piece of work.

LOL, I have about 10 hours, depending on whether I actually can be arsed to go to them or not....mwahaha.

10 hours a week?!?

I wish I had that!!

Well, considering I chose my own lectures and none of them are remotely connected to any course because I don't have to do exams and whatnot...
I'm currently studying: Arabic, History of Art, Modern European History, History of Religions, and Medieval European History (yeah I like History, but I wasn't clever enough to get in to do it at Durham!!)
It's great!

Since when did scientists do any extra reading? :p:

Yeah i know. But my point is that, other than research for essays, most social scientists/arts students don't do that much either.
Does anyone know how far Butler is from Philosophy? It doesn't seem to have been added to the map (either that or I'm too stupid to see it) and it looks like South Road (apparently the location) is a long way away...

I really want to select Butler...but it looks like it could be a bloody lengthy trek to my subject department.
To be honest it is really quite a long way, Durham is quite small but even so....

If you are choosing Butler because of the self-catering, it may be worth applying to Cuths and then to choose self-catering there. (You would be then situated at parsons field which is much closer to philosophy)
By the way, if you are looking on the same map as me, entitled University of Durham, Map and Information for Visitors. Butler is next to the "Graduate Centre on the SW corner of the map
Cheers. Ah, screw it, the walk won't hurt me...

:afraid:
BTW, there is a bus too into the city centre if you are too lazy to walk:smile:
Evening folks! What's the jazz?
