Chinese pupils perform better than their white counterparts by far, further more according to recent reasearch black girls surpass white boys at gcse and a level. I really dont see where you are coming from. I also saw the news today and it was on black carribean boys so get your facts right before you say something you are in the Durham forum!

lol...thank you for that, I couldn't be bothered to search for the report

rep given!

(I'm trying to give more rep these days, since I never ever give it!)

O......kay, you're an interesting one aren't you?

Firstly by saying that "ethnic minorities underperform academically in the UK" you are being racist, because you haven't termed it correctly. If you had stated that "on average, ethnic minorities underperform..etc" then I guess that would be fine. But what you're doing there is taking a report and assuming because many are like that, ALL are like that.

You say that in a "comedic fashion" it would be fine, but you don't realise certain things. Firstly just because some Asian comedians decide to make a comedy about an Asian-British community (i.e. East is East) it doesn't mean you can then go around making jokes about Asian people - comedians are careful about what they say and do, which is why when they make racist jokes, etc. they get booed down.

Also, when you're making jokes about charvers or posh people, this is joking about essentially a lifestyle choice rather than a skin colour and is a completely different area. I think you'd find a lot of people complaining if a Vicki Pollard sketch was done and they actually announced that it was set in a specific suburb in a specific city - because it would imply that people there were like that; whereas they are kept generic.

Same with posh people (or "toffs" as you like to call them, but to be fair the only people who I know who use the word "toff" are the rahs themselves, we say "rah")....you can make jokes about them but you can't go making statements like "the typical durham student is a toff" - because you don't know this!

And 98% of the time they're true? *******S, why not come to Durham and see for yourself? I'm a student at Durham (obviously), I'm from Newcastle and live in a former-council estate which was built post-WW2, my parents are civil servants with no university education in my family....hmm yeah I'm sure I'm a "toff"!!

Also, you say stereotypes would be dismissed by the public if they weren't true.....WHAT?! Are you kidding me?! For a few hundred years now the people of Africa have been stereotyped as barbaric, savage tribal people who hunt with spears and live in the wilderness - maybe true hundreds of years ago but today it's very far from the truth in many places! Yet when you open a magazine about Africa or watch a TV program about the place what do you see? Photos of tribal people with spears and face paint on, riding an elephant! Or of course the stereotype that all people in Africa are diseased and malnourished so we see photos of these people. IT'S NOT TRUE FOR MANY OF THEM - it's a stereotype, but people do not dismiss it.

BECAUSE THE MASS PUBLIC ARE STUPID AND BELIEVE WHAT THEY SEE ON THE TV AND READ IN THE NEWSPAPERS/CRAPPY MAGAZINES.

I'm sorry but you are so very very wrong

Step. Away. From. The computer.

Like, go and fly a kite or something, dude.

I don't assume all are like that - i know it's in the majority

you're at durham - so you're pedantic. Sorry I forgot we all had to be pedantic

You are in the 2% then aren't u.
i have found 98% of the time the stereotypes ARE TRUE

That is quite possibly the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard.

the people that predicted that we would be living on the moon by 1985 were less wrong than you.

OK, 12,000 students at Durham.

This means that 11,760 of those must be "toffs"

Considering I know of, lets say around 50 people who may be called "toffs" in my college - a college of 680 students.

Well that's your theory out of the window isn't it

Sean - sorry! Abusing idiots on here beats revision by a long way!

Nowadays I find I'm far too lazy to really engage in internet debates. I find it easier to allow them to wash over my head, though then I enter a mental dilemma over what this says about my attitudes to world issues themselves. I'll live though.

My room is a sty. Sometimes I wonder how I let it get to this but other times I try to view it like I do an internet debate. The latter is more effective.

What about on that 'no sex until 21' thread Jelkin? It disappeared so I can't check how it ended :frown:

Ha ha, oh yes. I didn't do too much arguing on that. Has it been deleted? The guy just sounded like a bit of a berk. "proper relationships start at 17, a girl can have one or two of those before she's 21, but nothing beyond first base, because only at 21 can you have a real proper relationship. Then you can have sex. Otherwise it's slutty." Geez. I know he didn't actually say that, but I was paraphrasing.

Do you enjoy keeping up to date on my TSR activity, arkbar?

The guy sounded like he was ugly and had no friends. Which I think was my point in the thread.
I posted in the thread about 2 posts below you, which is why I remembered.

I think girls having sex is slutty in general...

They can do so much better.

Yes I am very tired and absurdly confused.

Oh, and a complete ****ing idiot.

It's sunny in Dorset. But I can't get work done in the garden :frown:
Extremely sunny in Middlesbrough but all I've done all day is peel labels off anything in my room that has one. The antiperspirant roll on was the hardest, but I got there in the end.

^ That's reminiscent of that Mr Bean episode when he's going to paint his room so he covers every object in it in newspaper, including each separate grape, apple and banana in his bowl of fruit.
I love Mr Bean. Yet to see the film though! It's really nice and sunny here in Manchester. I have pretended to work in the garden by reading my lecture notes and textbook. Hmmm...
