Wow!!!! Did you guys know that Durham had a student website that was entirely devoted to airing Durham Students' views and opinions? I've just found out about it. It's even won NUS website of the year 5 out of the last 6 years and is the current holder! Wow!!!!!! It's amazing. Since I found out about it this morning I've spent the whole day reading articles from it. Most of them are really witty and incisive, and it's such a simple layout. What a brilliantly designed website! I'd say it deserves all of its awards. Wow!!!!

 I'm bored

I'm also bored...because I'm reading durham21 :p:

I agree with Dobbs. I'm not wasting my time reading http://www.durham21.co.uk. I've got better things to be doing than look at all the boring crap on http://www.durham21.co.uk. There must be far more enjoyable things to do than go on http://www.durham21.co.uk.

goldenbarnes, if you're so bored why don't you write an article for http://www.durham21.co.uk you ****ing lazy ****

Hahaha...desperate measures eh?

Actually, I am reading it now - it seems to be updated a bit more often than it used to be!

First article I read was on the musical at Trevs, where they call it the "Octagonal college" in the first paragraph......well, no, it's hexagonal. Sigh! (But a good review follows).

It's no-one's "fault" because it's an AWESOME thing that our college is in the shape that it is

But anyway, everyone in Durham knows Trevs is made of hexagons! Well maybe not everyone, but if you're going to write an article and mention it they should at least get it right! :p:

They're probably all Arts students who don't know the difference.

Good point well made

Although in my defence I have wrote an article for Players Inc (the only North East football magazine, buy it from all North Eastern WHSmiths -yes, including the one in Durham- and Menzies) today. It's not my fault I'm in such high demand.

Don't you have work?
I actually have to catch up on a whole one and a half term's worth of work as once again I was too lazy to go to any lectures this second term. But if I did it in two weeks last year and got decent results I'm hoping giving it three weeks this year will get me even better results. The key is to relax all year round and do no work, then having to work like a dog in the last two weeks is nothing as you're all refreshed and actually want to do work to stop you going boredom mental.

This is 100% true.

I did a similar thing the past two years, now in my final year you may have thought I had learned my lesson - I did try to do more work, but it's just not me. These holidays all I've done is PLAN the next few weeks, which I will be spending A LOT of time in the library.

If I get 50% in my dissertation, I have to average 63% in my exams to get a 2:1. I think this is doable if I am lucky in my exams and really DO work hard the next few weeks....as long as nothing gets in my way!

Not hoping for much on the dissertation front then?

Surely this 'theory' should be wrong, for generally the workload gets harder and there's more every year.
yeah but you also get better at doing it.

(again, in theory)

Yes and no. It's easier to cram for arts subjects, because you generally just need the knowledge of some sort of foundation, and then build upon it with links and theories, which is a lot easier to memorise. And a few foundations aren't that hard to learn. It is harder if you want to ace your subject, but the way I see it is you can work your balls off all year and still not be guaranteed a first, or you can take it easy, work hard for the three weeks leading up to exams and still work it up to a 2:1 (because even if I miss out on it this year I can just work a little harder to get it overall next year). And working 3 years of your life away on the chance of a first compared to taking it very easy and having the time of your life for 3 years and getting a 2:1 isn't really any comparison for me.

As someone said - no, because you get better at it! Because a lot of what you learn over the years (in Geography) is not necessarily the information but rather the "how to" of writing essays, and so by third year they're not necessarily looking for MORE information in your essays/exam answers, they're just looking for what is relevant for that course BUT the key thing is to present it to a far higher standard than you would have been doing in first year - I look back at my first year essays and cringe when I read them!

Also, there is a lot of luck involved also - I choose to only revise certain sections of the course, knowing that there SHOULD be a question on one of those sections. However this isn't guaranteed, so if they happened to offer 4 questions all on areas I hadn't revised, then I'd be stuffed! :frown:

Ali - I figured 50% is the absolute minimum that I should get for it, meaning that the 63% is what I should be aiming for, to be safe! I estimate I'll get somewhere between 50%-55%, but to be fair if I got under 50% I would be gutted, but maybe not too surprised
Damn essay strategy. I can spend ages researching and getting good info for an essay, but it won't get me good marks in the end, because I get bored with the structure. It's how you say it, not what you say
I'm screwed.

It's exactly the same when I do essays too! I thought I was the only one but alas no.:frown:
:ts: Death to all essays :ts:
I should really do my year abroad essay soon. My tutor sai she'd get back to me tomorrow though so hopefully I can start. Woohoo, litter and graffiti in italy! #excited#
