Danny: In response to Tufts talking about his lack of life because of law, in first year the life is what you make of it. It's perfectly possible to pass without doing very much because a lot of it is bringing people up to similar standards(goldenbarnes did not do anything for the last 2 terms) but equally a lot of people work their arses off,for reasons that mystify me.

That seems like a heavily disguised way of saying you don't think Tufts is up to it. :hmmm:

:hmmm: If that's true, I hope to god he does law, otherwise wtf is he talking about.

I am a Durham lawyer. I converse with other Durham lawyers. My pal works 17 hour per day trying to do all the reading for this degree.

He should probably read faster. I know law is a hard subject blah de blah, but it's apparently possible to pass it while missing 200+consecutive contact hours in first year.

Are you doing law?

Nope, but I know plenty of lawyers who certainly did nowhere near 17 hours a day of work, 1.7 would be more accurate.

well it appears you and I have conflicting views on what constitutes workload on a durham law degree. And since I'm actually doing a durham law degree, and also since I converse with durham lawyers everyday whom are also upset by the workload, then a logical conclusion would be that my view > your view.

There's no way those kind of people will get anything approaching a good degree though. Tufts is well on her way to getting a First, if her recent essay marks and the ease with which she sauntered through her exams are anything to go by. This certainly wouldn't be the case if she'd only studied "1.7 hours" a day.
Yes but that is true of any subject though isn't it. Anyone should be able to get a first if they work for 17 hours a day

He does know you're not supposed to read everything on the reading lists, right? I know plenty of lawyers and they all had time to have a good social life in first year. They even have time for a social life now. And they definately have never worked 17 hours per day! You need to relax a bit mate.
17 hours is a hell of a lot of work.I think I did 6-8 tops this year(I know I don't do law but still) and that felt like a lot.

What about eating?Sleeping?Lectures?
Nooo don't read everything on the reading list! The key is to be selective in your reading and manage your time optimally - that's the true value of learning, not trying to cram in every bit of information. In the exams I've found that I only use about 1/4 of the stuff I know about a module anyway, since the questions are specific. Chill

I think that the people who don't do much work for law are the ones who bear in mind that they only need to pass their first year, i.e. get 40%. Goldenbarnes has taken this philosophy through to the subsequent years of his degree, and hence finds plenty of time to play Pro Evo to his heart's content.
There's gotta be a happy medium. Surely not all people who get Firsts work 12 hours a day (though those I know of do) :frown:
