What are the balls generally like at Durham? Aside from burst-water-mains galore, that is. Are they along the lines of like, high school/college balls/proms where everyone wears ballgowns/Really Nice Dresses/tuxes, or more informal?
Very different - much better, unless perhaps you go to a really posh private school? *wouldn't know* There's a load of stuff going on, live music (which is generally really really good - a lot of colleges have famous bands), and a lot more is put into the decor. Everyone is in formal wear though - tuxes and ballgowns. Though I wore a H&M party dress type thing to the last one and people kept telling me it was really nice

Don't suppose anyone knows what goes on in the Renaissance history module? No idea why I signed up for that. I was planning on doing the French Revolution. Damn my flippant mind.
Tell me about it! Although I suspect having a job right up until the day before I leave for Durham will help pass the time.
Which college will you be at?
Yeah, having a job will help nicely. I am probably going to start applying for one next week.
Since I'm going as an exchange student (and not applying directly to a Durham college) I have no idea which college I will end up in! I think they are choosing the college for me. I probably won't find out for a while, but I wish I knew.
I am sorry to end the academic year with this, but an extended incident of sustained offensive banter has been drawn to my attention. The banter was racist in nature, and shameful. It happened a few days ago, but the passage of time does not lessen the need for some kind of response - not just on my part, but from all of us.
We are all responsible for the way St. Cuthbert's presents itself. So, if we - any of us - witness Cuths' people (including guests) being offensive, then have a polite word, or ask someone else to say something. If the behaviour continues or is too difficult to respond to in this way, then tell me, the Senior Tutor or the Bursar.
Thoughtless but nevertheless stigmatizing banter needs to be discouraged. I hope that the incident reported to me was an isolated one, and that nothing like it ever comes anywhere near us again. It is our collective responsibility to make sure that casual prejudices (which may sometimes take the form of apparently playful discriminatory comment) are not tolerated. In any case of racist or sexist or homophobic banter, the offensiveness is its first and foremost aspect.

Ah I see. I just assumed that they'd tell you which college you were assigned to, as my friend from India knew months ago.
