I have graduated and am trying to organise my life. This is terrifying. However, I may now have inklings of a plan. Has anyone used any kind of gap year organisation? Or been anywhere they can recommend in Africa?

PS I think I want to be a teacher. My friends laughed at me last night when I told them this because I claimed I am now more mature. They pointed out I still have mystery bruises from going to Klute on graduation night...

A tip for everyone - never, ever graduate. It's 4 days since I left Durham (forever) and I can tell you that post-uni life is ****ing awful.

Lol why do you think I'm taking a postgrad course? A mere summer away from Durham will nearly kill me...argh...

Hi guys, I have a few questions about sport and English at Durham that I havent been able to find answers to.

Are sports confined to terms? More specifically, are there football fixtures all year round? I cant see how football would really work unless you play each college three times or something!

Also, generally, how often to college teams train? Any footy examples would be great.

Lastly, I know that there are very few contact hours for English but how many are there exactly per week? And when are the lectures/seminars/tutorials for the three compulsory 1st year courses of intro to poetry/the novel/drama?

Sorry, I havent acted like an over-excited child for ages about Durham but these questions just came to mind. Thanks!
I'm quite looking forward to leving Durham, and I still have another year left! :s-smilie:

Maybe it's because all my best friends just graduated though...:frown:

We'll have to do more TSR meetups next year so we don't get sad.

Are you living in?

Why don't you guys do a postgrad course?
I'm thinking of it, but not in Durham. I can't stand to be there another year after I finish, so I'm looking at bigger cities like Leeds, Bristol & UCL.

Yeh, I'll have to get a loan if I decide to do an MA.

I don't get an en suite next year. ;no;
Hi, i am hopefully going to Durham this year and have a couple of questions:
Can you be forced into sharing a room in college or is it opt in?
Whats the likelyhood of being accepted if you miss your offer, for example by one grade, and how do they decide among those who missed their offer who gets a place?
Thanks in advance
My college doesn't have shared rooms, so I don't know about that, but I think most people at shared room colleges share for at least one term, but it differs from college to college, so best ask someone from Aidan's.
You won't get in if you miss your grades, Durham is a very competitive university, NatSci a very competitive course. Durham very very rarely, if ever, accept someone who has missed their grades.

Thanks for the reply Applying4Maths,
Ok lets assume if i were to miss my grades (unlikely but i like to have a contingency) but wanted to do a different and unpopular course, would they let me switch subjects and still get into Durham? Also if i had a good reason for not wanting to share a room would they allow me to have a single, even if the college policy is everyone shares for a term?

They may well let you go for a different course but only if you reapply i.e. take a gap year. Highly unlikely they'll let you come this year if you miss your grades.
If you have a good reason for not wanting to share a room, you could write it on the form they send you and they'll take it into consideration.
If you have medical reasons for not being able to share a room, they can't make you. If you write on the form that you are terrifically anti-social (eg. you play loud grindcore until 4am) they probably won't make you share either, though I would advise against lying too extravagantly! Also, I don't know about the policy at Aidan's, but at Grey you can opt to have an 'extended let', where you can leave your stuff in college during the holidays- usually this means you won't end up sharing, because you tend to keep the same room, but it's not dead cert.

Don't be too worried about room sharing though- it would only be for one term, and everyone who I know who's shared has enjoyed it.

Thanks for the replies Bravenewcentury and Applying4Maths,
The sharing room thing is more like i dont wont to end up with anyone that snores more than anything, and who is going to admit to that on their form! Also I am one of those ppl who likes his space. As for the grades, hopefully I will make them and see you all in october!
