Isn't there an open air museum in Beamish (yes, the word from that "Jabberwocky" poem) that's meant to be really good? My mum suggested I go there and I sniggered quietly to myself, knowing full well that during term-time I would do nothing educational whatsoever.

Hehe how could I forget to add in Beamish since my boyfriend works there!!

He works as a 'costumed interpreter' in several areas of the 1913 town and has been working there since March this year and August last year.(They have a summer season that ends in October just to clear up the confusion.)

It's quite pricey but it is worth the ticket price as you get to ride on trams, old buses, go down an old mine, go to a school in the Colliery village, have a ride on a train, go into the 1913 town and there's also a farm and Victorian Manor House.

arkbar: yeah, I had heard about most of those differences before, and most of them sound interesting. Oh and the Berkeley campus has hills too, haha, so that won't be so different.

I wonder what you mean by the drinking culture though? That it's so underground here because of the drinking age?

RobbieC: Thanks, and I don't know why you'd think I'd grimace, haha. So there aren't many Americans there? Sounds like it'd be fun to be a novelty. :p:

I'll be studying politics and English literature over there.
The only American girl who was in my year, she was just fantastic. Stylish, fun and beautiful in every way. I'm sure you'll fit in as well as she did, we love the 'cans here:biggrin:

"costumed interpreter"? That sounds like the best job ever. I'll be working for the NHS next week though so even though it'll be like crying in the corner all day every day, I can feel good about myself because I'll be helping people. However, a costumed interpreter clearly helps people as well. Hmmm.

Why have all these people left? Don't tell me they have "better things to do now". Ugh. Meet-ups should be fun. Though I really need someone to tell me what they tell their friends when they go to meet people off the internet because ... well. You know.

Awww, "selkie". One of my nicknames is "Jelkie". We could duet. We could sing songs by Elkie Brooks. *dreams quietly*
Robbie, how many people/rooms are there in a flat at Collingwood?

There are flats in Collingwood? Aren't there corridors?

RobbieC: Wow, so Americans are pretty rare then. Good to know that we're liked.

Jelkin: you're so cute, haha! Oh and I didn't know who Elkie Brooks was before you mentioned her. She's quite obscure over here. I guess this is one of those vital pieces of pop culture knowledge I should learn before I arrive in Durham, eh? :p:

lol. I have no idea. I just keep seeing people mentioning flatmates, so I assumed everything had flats. What's the difference between a flat and a corridor?
Reply 6588
Butler has flats, Mildert has corridors, Trevs has 'landings' etc etc.
Generally speaking a flat is a smallishself-enclosed set of rooms with a proper kitchen etc., these are not common in Durham as almost all the colleges are catered so they've gone for the long corridor approach.

Nah, I doubt many people over here have heard of her - in fact, I think she's probably American. She used to be in a rock band (Vinegar Joe? Something like that) and then had a solo career somewhen. "Pearl's a Singer" is actually the only song I've heard. If you want to fit in here, go for cheese and bland indie.

:thumpdown :thumpdown

it's true

:bawling:
I'm still slightly worried that "cheese" is a genre of music here. :mute:

Right, okay, that clears things up. So what do you call people on your corridor? Corridormates?
floormates, generally... corridormates is a bit of a mouthful I think...

I am in Egremont next year, the prettiest of all the corridor buildings.

Allegedly I have a bath in my room. Scary.

I imagine it wont be in the middle of your room Rob, but I will demand to come and see its glorious magnificence.
And I'm gonna miss you, like a child misses their blaankeeeet

And you shall. I will hold some sort of pretentious opening ceremony.

There will be fine wines, and a cheeseboard. Perhaps crackers, and Tchaikovsky.
And bubble bath.
Wanna bring some?

Edit: Sorry, that was a bit too sexually implicit. First glass of champagne at the grand event is now free to you, Mr. Porter, as long as you dont lawsuit me.
More bubbly?

Ho ho!
