I reckon more students will end up around that area than would end up around Loveshack this year (especially for sports socials), which I suppose is bad because it's more of a residential area. Just a guess though.

Because it's almost certainly going to {edit:believed to become} a crime hotspot, which is the sort of thing that the police hate. In addition to this,it's wildly out of kilter with the supposed ethos of Durham.

Do you work for Durham Police by any chance Ali?

I never thought of that effect but it's very true.

Does anybody know what happened with History and Politics last year? A friend of mine said other friends of mine(who did both) had their degrees screwed up, and now I can see a post on here asking "where has the degree for History and Politics gone?".
Why would it become a crime hotspot? And why does it not fit in with the 'supposed ethos' of Durham? Do Burger King and Subway fit in with this supposed ethos?

No, but I've worked in town centre management at home, and exactly the same sorts of concerns were raised here. The logic goes something like: Lapdancing>drunk men as the primary customer>increase in assaults and sexually related offences outside and nearby and greater fear of crime for women (because of fear of seuxal assault etc.).

I haven't read any empirical evidence confirming or denying this,it's just been the line taken by both police forces and licensee groups+members of the public at home and here.
North Road's the dodgiest place in Durham on a weekend night already, so I doubt a lapdancing club will affect this much.

That's ridiculous though. If only for the fact that a night club would have an awful lot more drunk men in than a lapdancing place anyway. Also, this is a place where generally people get less drunk than they would in a night club, there's more security measures and bouncers just in case anyway, people walk out a lot happier than they could do in a nightclub, and there's no trouble inside either, as there's no mixing of groups or inter-group socialising (or a massively huddled dance floor).

When I have the time (i.e when I should really be doing something else) I'll go on a hunt for any empirical evidence I can find on this. However, I think the 'fear of crime' thing might be a bit more difficult to quantify.

North Road may be dodgy by Durham standards, but I would feel safer sitting on North Road with a laptop out in front of me at 1:00am than I do walking past my local shops back in Manchester in the daytime.
By the way, I can't see this being that popular with students at all, apart from the odd sports social. I certainly wouldn't go with any of my mates, though I will probably go with my girlfriend whenever she's up (as long as it's not ridiculously expensive).
Why IS that, Sean?

I don't see how going for a lapdance with one's woman would enhance an experience like that. Enlighten me!
Errr.... it just does. We usually go in after a few drinks elsewhere, get a drink, watch some pole dancing and then get a private dance with two dancers (if you're in on a quiet night they usually settle for a deal, so 15 quid instead of 20 (10 each*)). Then maybe have another drink and go home. I feel like I have nothing to say to describe it and I should say try it for yourself, but I also know it won't be to everyone's pleasure. It's just a nice, pleasant (dare I say arousing) experience. We love it.

Suppose it's just like couples watching porn together - only it's a bit more interactive!
Oh, so do girls and guys give lapdances for you? I could imagine that would be pretty ****ing hot.
Reply 6714
Of course, it's a lapdancing club, what else would they be doing? Playing frisbee?

you can get lapdances of guys? hot.
Never known of male lapdancers.
Chippendales!
See, Alex and I were suggesting that we might get male lapdances.

Equality and all that jazz.

No love for the gays, then. Tisk!
