I'm hoping the connection in halls will be better, but I'm not too sure.

I doubt you'll have to worry about either reliability or speed. I think it was bigred who stated that it's 10mbps.

I presume that's the connection to the room? I would guess the connection from the uni's servers to the outside matters more, especially when things get busy.

Yeah, it's a bit pants that you're not allowed to game or bittorrent from inside halls anyway.
No gaming? :\ That's annoying. I knew about the bittorrent before, at least; it's frustrating but I guess it would probably put a lot more strain on the connection. Is there anything else we can't do?
Hopping Mad Kangaroo
You must have written a bloody good PS...
Do they read those things?
From inside halls, you are however allowed to use Sharescan!! (Runs)

Well, you can play games internally (inside your college) but all the ports are blocked for doing it externally, and ITS apparently come down on you like a ton of bricks if they find you doing it.
You were playing age of empires were you?? WITH ANOTHER STUDENT AT A DIFFERENT COLLEGE!?!

...yes....

*kick*

Bunch of ****ing idiots at ITS.
could get really annoying, bit torrent isn't just used for illegally downloading movies/tv series.

apparently the rules state you have to have advanced permission and supervision to look at porn, and I've heard of a student that got that permission...

No, there's also music/games/software/ebooks :p:

Who needs torrents anyway; there are plenty of other sources for these things...

When you are downloading something legally like a linux distro or anything free like a indi video/music or software, that's quite big(taking a long time to download) and:
a) your computer might need to be turned off during download (or otherwise the download be interrupted)
b) the person giving the file away does not have the resources to host it for download by loads of people (server bandwidth can be expensive)
c) and some other reasons

But maybe you can somehow get round it if you can come up with a reason that involves it being important to your studies.

At my college ICT students got unlimited print credit top ups, everyone else got 250 credits a year, and had to pay for more.
Oh the laughs when we printed a few hundred blank pages when a class mate left their desk for a moment.
I just got my welcome letter and reading list for foundation... start on Monday 1st at 9.30am! !!!

Social Science Foundation reading list
You may also want to tune in to television programmes and documentaries that have related sociological and anthropological content ('Tribe', 'Supernanny', 'Wifeswap', Timeteam', 'Taboo', 'Storyville', etc.).

No way are they getting me to watch Wifeswap or Supernanny, thanks! What utter tosh! I'm also reluctant to watch Timeteam, but Tribe is excellent and I think I shall use this recommendation as an excuse to use uni money to buy the DVD when it comes out in a few weeks.
Woah.

I've been doing a bit of Social Science reading this summer without realising.
Haven't seen any of them, ever. Oh n.. yey

Time team is like an itch that I mustn't scratch. It annoys me when I watch it, but I keep watching it anyway :frown:
I got my department welcome pack this morning too. Exciting stuff

It's not only on the internet, but also anything you bring with you on DVD or hard drive. They say you can't view porn at all when connected to anything managed by the university! Wtf is this?
I would guess it's highly unlikely they can tell. Unless, you start streaming 1080p porn across the network, where they'd probably notice pretty quickly.
Well the guy I heard about getting permission made some program that was an offline browser or search engine or something, starting at a forum which could link to dodgey stuff so he got the permission.

Anyway... I got my welcome pack!!!!!!
Now I'm very excited, although I've got a load of stuff to read through (mainly boring i expect), can't wait till the 29th!

RE: the net.
What if a couple of colleges set up network game societies and then wanted to play an inter-college match? Perhaps the rules/ports could be twisted to allow for that if someone was a good negotiator.
My welcome pack is great  it's a mix of freshers handbooks and loads of grown-up looking MCR and postgrad stuff...though it looks like their social scene isn't up to much, so I'll be gatecrashing a lot of the fresher's week events :p:
