G? That's crazy - my friend who was also running put down 2hrs as her estimated time and she ended up in Zone E! Oh well, not much you can do I guess!

10th mile? Hmmm where was that...oh yeah no that wasn't too bad for me. It was kinda between 7 - 9 miles that killed me because I got the biggest stitch I'd ever had in my life. Was lucky because just before 9 miles there were some portaloos so I had to jump into one and let it relax off whilst doing some business  ...that sorted me out quite good actually and set off again feeling much better

The best part is like the first 4 miles, they went so quick! It was insane! Then I started to get bored

Things I like:
-Red Arrows
-People giving out segments of oranges
-The finish line

Things I dislike:
-Charvers wanting everyone to give them a hi-five and screaming at you if you don't
-First Aid people putting HUGE chunks of vaseline on their hands so that if you don't want to stop and carefully take a small bit you have to take the whole chunk and figure out what to do with all the crap then deciding to just rub it around your hands, making the bottle of water that you then grab at a station slip OUT of your hands, grrr
-Being forced to do a warm up by some random dude in lycra, when he was actually behind me, and the screens were set up so that I couldn't see any of them!

Still, I loved it! Weather was awesome! Got a tan

I found the first 3 miles strangely tough, then 4-9 were fine, but the last 4 miles were grueling...

Things I like:

-My Beautiful Medal and T-shirt !
-Chanting "Ogi Ogi Ogi - Oi Oi Oi" through the tunnels.
-The mist-spray things.

Things I don't like:

-The excruciating pain I'm now in.
-Having to weave in and out of people who clearly overestimated their running ability .
-The traffic queues and lines for the Metro :frown:.

All in all it was a great day, I've got a tan aswell, though my face is a bit burnt , I wasn't expecting it to be so warm. You running next year dobbs?

Haha the "Oggy oggy oggy" thing happens every year it's awesome and one of the best things about it - I love the really uplifting atmosphere at the start when you're running through Newcastle and everyone's full of energy, singing, and all that. I was in hysterics when a guy in a shark costume who was just in front of me went past some guy and that guy was like "****in' hell I've just been overtaken by a shark!" Everyone around him laughed!

The last time I did it it was held half way through September, it was insanely hot (5 people died due to heat/dehydration!) and that's why it's now held 2 weeks later, so from experience I had expected it to be warm but thought maybe it would be crap weather with it being 2 weeks later. I was wrong

And yep I plan to do it next year, also looking to do the London Marathon if possible....not sure yet though! 13 miles was hard but I felt that with a decent chunk more training and pacing myself out better the Marathon would be do-able

Becca - the vaseline is to put on certain areas of your body which rub - such as on your thighs/knees as they can rub together, under your arm pits as they rub, and then some on your lips to keep them from going really dry. I only needed a little bit but got LOADS and ended up having to wipe it all over me which was annoying!
Oh yeah, thigh-rub can be excrutiating. :sadnod:
Wow guys, well done on the run. I could never do something like that. I'm a lady of leisure, me:biggrin:

Congratulations.

What do you mean you could never do something like that?! Didn't you do the London Marathon last year?!!! Fool :p:
Lol, that's what I was gonna say Kev! Robbie you've already done "something like that"
oooh hey, congrats to all the great north runners! i was there as a steward, standing in my sexy massive red jacket doing absolutely nothing! easiest money i ever made lol  it was such an exciting event though, absolutely loved it. very inspiring. i was at the 6 mile point, with the crazy mexican singers  legends.
once again, congrats to you all, it looked like a lot of fun despite all the red faced, vaseline grabbing, water bottle throwing (got splashed a lot, grr) action. hahaa.

You mean the Peruvian pipe band? They're awesome - they play in Newcastle city centre quite often and I've also seen them in Durham on rare occasions! I remember running past them and thinking "Yay! I love those guys!" - they play some great music!

How did you get to be a steward? Are you a member of a community group or did you just apply to be one or something? (I ask because my Mam wants to help out next year)
One of my new flatmates is on TSR too.

What's all this about a run then?

Are you actually from the USA or is that just you putting a random flag on your profile? I only ask because most people in the UK will have heard of the Great North Run.

It's a 13.1 mile run in Newcastle/Gateshead and it's officially "the world's biggest half marathon" with 50,000 people running it each year. It's awesome. Do it

PS. I was in Trevs last night to see my 4th year/postgrad mates. Was weird seeing all the Freshers around! Then I was at the bar and some girl told me she was in my bar quiz team on the Open Days (I didn't remember her) then asked to borrow 50p! The cheek! But I gave her it, doubt I'll ever get it back

Will be back on Sunday, haha! I may never leave
I'm loving the fresherage. They are the sex. Was at loveshack last night, being a dirty old man I was :-D

I must say that last night in Trevs bar a bar crawl came in from Butler (the biggest bar crawl I've ever seen) and, well let's just say that the guys in Butler are very lucky!

No it was 50,000 again, it's been that many for the past few years as they can't fit any more down the start straight or something like that. If you look at the results, the highest race number is something like 50,200.

I have just received an invoice for a £30 "St Cuthberts JCR Charge".

JCR charges differ between colleges on what they offer, but generally will cover things like:

-Damages (including sporting areas like tennis courts etc which are used by both liver in and outs)
-The college library
-Your college day in 3rd term, and sometimes used to subsidise the Balls
-I guess things like IT facilities, music rooms, all that stuff!

You get charged this whether you live in or out of college, simply because you're a member of the JCR. You can opt out of being a member of the JCR but this means you're technically not allowed to use the facilities such as the library, gym, computer rooms, TV rooms, and even formals!
