 Well I won't be complaining when they hike up the printer unit charges to compensate for lost paper

You mean the printer unit charges that they shouldnt charge in the first place.

Thank yoooou !
I have a plan B! My own printer.

I'm not actually sure they even have sufficient computing knowledge to alter such things anyway, those who did this once, clearly have long since passed away. And with them, died their all-encompassing wisdom.

Why not? If they didn't charge them, people would print out absolutely crap loads. I know for a fact that the journals that I downloaded would have been printed out endlessly if I didn't have to pay for them. Because I did, I always printed them 2 sides to a piece of A4 and then only what I really needed...and even then I didn't always read it!

You're not only paying for the supplies, but you know that if they didn't charge then you'd use so many resources it would be so environmentally UNfriendly!

Yeah it's annoying because of the amount you already pay, but get over it.
Do you get some free to start and do any subjects get extra allowance?

I'm thinking it's going to be easier & cheaper to print myself.

Yeah you get some free to start off with. 10 or 20. Or maybe 50? Can't remember!

And although it seems easier and cheaper to print yourself sometimes, at other times I felt I couldn't rely on my printer and so just used the ones in college. Just depends what you fancy
Well it doesn't look like I'll use the college computers much except the odd practical when my laptop doesnt have required specific software or such.
I'm also avoiding using duo or uni webmail much.

Why?
I'm happy with my laptop.
Webmail forwarded to another account.
DUO doesn't need to be used apart from 1 of my elective modules.

Does that answer your general why question?
My lecturer today said that duo was ''a giant step backward for humanity'' which I though was slightly harsh.

He didn't elaborate on that, he was far more interested in showing us picture of himself with patrick moore and telling us the same anecdotes he told us in first year

DUO is used to death by the law depertment.

In other news, I'm moving my crap into my new pad today.

Given the extra £3000 we are paying in tuition fees, i think they can find the money to give us a decent amount of free print credits (250-500), and sell the rest at cost price (pretty much 1p/ page). Just because some people abuse the printing system does not mean the rest of us abuse it, and we all shouldnt be collectively penalised like that.

How could you possibly create a system whereby only the people who abuse it get punished? It would cost the University much much more to put CCTV cameras by every printer and then people to operate the cameras and then all the random costs on top of that.

I know it's unfortunate, but if people are going to abuse it, they don't really have any option but to charge everyone for it.

It's just like how I keep myself healthy and don't smoke yet pay the same taxes as everyone else for the NHS. In the end, it would be more expensive for all of us to only punish the individuals, unfortunately :frown:

Ok, lets go for the abuse you described, as an example, where you print off the journals several times. If the ITS kept a log of what was printed, then it could charge you for the repeat copy for instance, if you had already printed it. Very simple and cheap to implement. Or of course, they give out a good few hundred print credits to begin with, so people who were extreme users would pay a little, where as everyone else would not. What isnt fair is that they charge so much it is actually profitable to them. There are lots of things that could be done if they had the will, the fact is they dont.

I think dobbs was saying that he wouldn't be printing out the journals several times, he would just be printing out reams of journal articles, which, to be fair I would do if it were free.

Well there is nothing wrong with printing out reams of journal articles anyway, as long as its not the same one over and over. Asides, it costs them almost the same pretty much if you read it on a pc monitor as opposed to paper. As long as you recycle them afterwards what does it matter?
Hi guys :eek2: I've finally managed to get online... currently on the fresher account in the QC library because I still don't have my campus card. It's weird being on the Durham forum now from the university, after all this time talking about it.

Because I'm so not reading back through the threads (I think the library is closing in an hour)... how's everyone found their first week (back)? Anything exciting happened in TSR land?
