There are less topics which is a good thing I think. They cover three major topics in Foundations; Electromagnetism, Atomic Physics and Quantum Mechanics. I've finished Quantum Mechanics which in all honesty wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, yes there are a few abstract ideas but the lecturer produces a good set of notes. Electromagnetism there's quite a lot of new material and watch out for Hampshire, he is the living form of the devil, I swear, especially in examples classes.
Hmm, I am pondering giving Physics a miss next year. What exactly does Hampshire do?

He tends to pick on people to answer questions during lectures and in example classes he will keep asking you questions until you get something right. When you get into the example classes, he doesn't even give you time to think about the question, he just dives straight in. Don't let that put you off though because the course itself is very interesting.

It probably is, if I get to take it. Because of the way I have taken my Nat Sci if I stick with Physics I dont get any choice of modules. Partly the thing that is tempting me to switch, there are areas of Maths I really like and want to do next year.
Its a pity, I reckon I would enjoy having Hampshire. Interactive lectures are way more fun.
A nice overview... full of profanity, would be really useful if you could.
I'd rep you for it, but you'll have to wait... I've been rep banned for 3 months.
Please help me get back the 2000pts they stole from me. I was so near a yellow!!!!!!
Every little helps! Hehe
Well the major thing is obviously the project. What you spend your days doing is greatly dependent on what your project is. Mine is at the theoretical end, so i spend most of my time doing maths on a sheet of paper until I can get to something that a computer program will do for me (of course I then have to create the program myself *sigh*). It’s still quite fun though if you like that sort of thing.
People at the more experimental end tend to spend days in the lab. Not necessarily Durham labs either, I know a guy who goes to Sedgefield once a week because they have an astrolabe there apparently.
The rest is 3 modules in which you have two lectures a week each. I take Advanced theoretical (which isn’t as bad as it sounds), theoretical astronomy (which isn’t too bad) and particle theory (which is an absolute frigging nightmare).
The first term has no deadlines (beyond weekly problems) and people just spend time getting on with their project really. It’s the second term which is the crusher, I handed in a 10 page prelim report last Thursday, have a seminar to give next month and an oral exam to prepare for around the same time. It is fairly spread out though so if you manage your time effectively it can be handled with a minimum of stress (unless perhaps you have a catastrophe in the lab or something)
and yeah, do tell why you got rep banned. were you being a dirty filthy rep whore?

He gets worse in third year, he gives some unlucky soul a piece of chalk and gets them to answer questions on the board I have heard.
Rep banned because apparently I repped someone too often (even though limits are in place to make it so you can only do it every couple of weeks?!) bit stupid really. It's not the end of the world, but they took a couple of months rep from me, some of which I earned through helping people and whatnot. Bunch of unilateral ********s.
Second year was awful, but I only went to 3 physics lectures in second year, of about 50... then didn't revise (well I did, for ten hours the day before the exam). Somehow passed, but it was horrifically messy.
