Yes I have, how much have you got left?
Sure, it's odd on here moving between TSR/real names.

itchynscratchy, what standard is the Durham Chess Soc?(in BCF terms)

I play board 4 for the A team off 135, the A team ranges from 158 on board 1 to 120 on board 5. The B team however is considerably weaker and consists mainly of people who have no official grade as of yet.

The A team play the B team on Thursday, if you fancy coming down then PM me and i will let you know where and when
If I beat Ali tomorrow, I will come too maybe:wink:

All are welcome (so long as they pay the membership fees  )

Heh, A is a bit above my standard as back when I played chess regularly (4 years ago) I was 80-88ish and I don't really have the patience for longplay these days (I sound like an old man  )
What does the number indicate? Or rather how is it established??

There is no obligation to play for any team, we have social nights every wednesdays in the swan and three from 7 (except this coming wednesday since the room was pre-booked). to be honest we have only just got going as a fully fleged society and could use the membership.

basically results are sent to the BCF (British chess federation) you get opponents grade +50 for a win, opponents grade for a draw and opponents grade -50 for a loss. your grade is then your number of points divided by your games that year. If, for example you played 3 games against someone graded 100 and win two and draw one then your grade is (150 + 150 + 100)/3 = 133
A flaw in the system. I play 3 chess grandmasters in my fresher year, each with a rating of about 600 or something stupid.

I lose my first two games, but manage to slip victory in the third:wink:

I might pootle over and drag Robbie too *grin*, if I'm not going to ICBIN this week that is.
I remember playing league chess for my club back in the oldens days *wistful* we fielded a team with 3 U-18s (out of 4 boards), but to be fair the top board is now graded something in the region of 170...

1) highest GM's only reach about 280.
2) you would never slip a victory against one (no offence, i couldn't either  )
3) the above was only the basic system, you can never get more than ten points less than your current grade for a loss or less than ten points higher than your grade for a win. You cannot recieve more than 90 points more than your grade for a win (or draw) or 90 less than your grade for a loss (or draw). If someone has no know grade then it is estimated using available information

Chris, hope you're proud with the success of this thread! Though it has strayed ever so slightly from the original topic...not that becca will mind, i'm sure! I'm still keeping up my duty of night-time officer though!

Did someone say annoying Becca?

WHEN WILL I GET MY OFFER?
 Nah, I know grand masters are meant to be good. But at a certain point Im sure rating begins to mean very little, because the players will go beyond being able to make mistakes, and every game between them will end as a draw.

My human geography title is nasty, as in, vague.
"What can human geographers contribute to the study of a globalising economy."

And… where to start on that one?

I have 3 weeks though… Or something like that… It's aaaaaall good.

most grandmaster games do end in a draw, but not all. even the best players cannot play flawlessly every time, it would be a bit boring if they could
It should be renamed: 'Durham General Geography Essay Title Chat'
