But you can spend the same time or longer on a bus with the fumes, or even longer walking! You're more likely to be hurt cycling (compared with walking/bus/tube/train) but apparently the halth benefits outweigh this... not sure about that myself (two ICers were killed last year, both on Cromwell Road, an ICT staff member and a PhD student).

If you cycle you could get one of those face masks that people wear to stop the fumes. But arriving in the college smelling of fumes and sweat, covered in muddy water in the middle of January is not very appealing. You would either have to wear those lycra outfits (tres chic) and change at the college, then change to go home or stay all wet all day. Also, it is a pain cycling carrying a load of books etc, even in a backpack.

There is a tesco's or sainsbury's (can't remember which) in Fulham Broadway station (10 minute walk). It is a local version rather than the full one, but it is quite big - I think it has everything that we will need. What I am nervous about is walking home from the union after a few beers.
