It's ok, they won't expect you to balance 7 plates at once on your first day. I've been doing it almost a year and the max I go for if they are fullsize is two on one hand and one the other. Waiting is a pretty quick thing to pick up though, but it is hard work.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine

I am a waiter but I only do drinks because where I work there are too many orders for just one waiter to handle food and drink, which can be VERY tricky as you can imagine. just remember dont take anymore than you can handle, if it means 2 trips so be it, its better to keep some people waiting a little longer, than the whole table waiting while you clean up their order.

I'll second that. Also don't be afraid of asking people to repeat what they wanted. They won't mind repeating but they will mind if they get the wrong order.

I've been a waitress before, and it's hard work!! My job also entailed preparing some of the food, and washing up/cleaning. There's lots of heavy lifting involved (or there was in my case at least), and be prepared for the customers to be very rude and unfair!!

Waiting is one of the most simple jobs you can do, however that isn't to say it isn't hard work! Anyone can do it, so don't worry too much about it. The hardest thing about it is being on your feet all the time and when it gets busy. Just relax.

hmmm, yeah. It is one of the simplest jobs and anyone can do it..in the same sense as most other jobs. To do it well? Pahhhhh! Really competent waiters/staff in the UK make up a TINY minority of serving staff in this country.

Don't rush around, don't take more than you are comfortable with - it's much easier on you and much more poffesional. If you get anything wrong, apologise profusely and smile! Waiters carrying 10 plates and running around is like something out of american movies - and certainly not reality. 3 plates is the max i'd ever go with and I've been doing it for 10+ years, not because I can't but because there is no point.

Ahh, just re-read your post. Big events are SO much easier. People pretty much ignore you and any waiting etiquette can go right out the window. Still hard work but a much more forgiving enviromnent.
