My mate did sociology and got in with BBC from a BBB offer.

Although this course is literally the ******** course at Notts and ranked like 50th. You probably wouldn't get much slack with economics, law, medicine etc
^ Well said. The most popular and oversubscribed courses have no compromising
If you take an popular course, which at Nottingham probably mean anything with an AAB+ offer then they would probably not let you in. This is especially true now because Nottingham over recruited recently and so are being tighter on offers and acceptances.

With regards to the people above, comp sci and sociology are regared as two of the weaker subjects at Nottingham for entry - they have the lowest average tariff scores of any courses and their BBB offers are some of the lowest.

I know that last year depts like Politics, Law, Econ, History, Georgraphy, English and other popular ones said they did not accept anyone who missed their offer.

Then again, it fluctuates every year depending on who gets the grades.
Do you think the probability of someone getting in, despite narrowly missing their grade, would increase if they were foreign students.

I got an ABB offer for a management course where the general offer is AAB. The thing is I might get AAC. :frown:

I wish the VC would drop sociology, it's a ******* liability and how two thicko's from my school managed to get in. Computer science is atleast academic.
I would imagine the engineering/science/computer science/some arts degree would let you in with lower grades because they aren't oversubscribed.

i bet some people are sick of hearing my story but i applied for management last year when the grades were ABB and ended up getting BBB (with an A in general studies and 5 ums away from an A in one of my subjects) and they wouldnt let me in.

however, this year i applied again and the grades were AAB, i resat some stuff and i thought I'd gotten ABB (remark proved that wrong) and they said theyd let me in with ABB.
but that may have been cause i was like 'PLLEAAAASEEE let me in'!

Depends entirely on the subject.

Depends entirely on that years cohort. However, the offer for Georgraph used to be AAA/AAB so they might expect AAB to be the least they want. Plus, the average student on geography for the last 3 years had a UCAS tariff score of 437, 449 and 443, so they tend to get quite a bit above their offer (i.e. over AAAa)

For now, have a look in my sig to see why

Don't get you. You mean they are accepting as many students as they can to raise capital?
I need AAB last year. Missed on an A by one UMS mark and got turned down. Thankfully got the A after a remark and have an unconditional this year

The Politics guy, Neville, sent me a very genuine email at first though explaining although it is unfair not to be able to give me a place the government fines unis for every extra student they take so they'd have to pay thousands in fines for every student above their quota...

Nah, they are/have pumped a lot of money into engineering/science over the last few years , culminating in the opening of two big science buildings next may (see my sig)- and this is why...

Nottingham University
Nottingham's vision for the future is that by 2020 it will be recognised as an international location for scientific, research and teaching excellence. This will strongly support the economic prosperity of the Nottingham city region and make a major contribution to a flourishing East Midlands.

So long term they plan to have have very strong and well funded departments in these areas - whether that means competitive also I'm not sure, but I wouldn't bet against the entry tariff for Engineering (Mechanical) rising from about 391 to 420/30ish over the next few years.

That will depend solely on the number of applicants per place increasing and the offers as well. The problem with engineering is that the offers are relatively low on the whole. Most of the MEng degrees have good offers of AAA-AAB, but the BEng degrees have far less (ABB-BBC). Unless they increase their offers for the latter then the tariff won't go up that much.

The thing about Nottingham is that all the courses with AAB and AAA offers have an average tariff of 420-500 (ie. over AAAa), but it is the ones with lower offers that bring the university's average tariff down, and Nottingham for some reason offers lots of random courses that it should not have IMO.

Its a shame earing in mind Nottingham used to average the 6th highest tariff score in the UK for over a decade.

Nottingham also needs to stop increasing their student numbers every year, esp when applicant numbers are not going up as fast. It is the only top university to do this which makes it even worse.
