I haven't heard of any medecine, I don't really know much about it but did you watch that program about it? the house of OCDs. Is it something you have? If so, in what way? I'd recommend asking for the type of counselling those people had on the program coz the effects were amazing.

Hi Feynman

There are a whole variety of medications for treating ocd, there are too many to mention, you would need to go see your doctor who could recommend you a specific one.

Your best bet is also to seek a refferal for Cognitive Behavioural therapy(CBT) for your ocd. CBT is the best and most recommended treatment for ocd. Medication can help but they only supress the symptoms they don't get rid of the problem altogether that's why CBT is usually recommended and needed, medication just helps to assist you with this.

CBT on tis own, or in conjunction with anxiolytic/antidepressive medication?

Either, some people find they can cope with the CBT and don't need medication to help them along the way. Others need a combination of CBT and medication to help. It depends on many factors such as severity of ocd, if currently taking any other medications etc. Most common form of medication used to treat ocd is SSRI's.

don't forget tht the comorbidity rate of OCD with clinical depression and anxiety disorders is ridiculously high.

thats the other reason for the SSRIs.

The reasons for the SSRI's are also due to the fact that they are newer drugs and tend to have much fewer side effects than the older form of Anti-depressants.

Whilst, there are some people who do suffer from clinical depression alongside ocd. The school of thought tends to be that the depression in itself should not always be charecterised as a separate disorder, as in a lot of cases the depression is much more likely to be as a consequence of the ocd, or ocd induced depression, rather than basic borderline clinical depression in itself.

So, if this is the case for an individual with ocd, that their depression has been ocd induced, the depression tends to be treated as part of the ocd rather than being given a separate identity. Though all cases do vary, as no two individuals with ocd are ever the same due to the nature and diversity of the condition.
