Best uni/coll in Malaysia for transferring to UK

Hello all,

If you've read my other threads you already know that I have a strong desire to study Civil Engineering in a UK university, but now I need to follow a different route to achieve my goal.

I have decided to go to Malaysia to study for Year 1 and/or Year 2 of Civil Engineering and then transfer to a partner or 'non-partner' uni in UK to complete my course. In other words, I want to gain a British Degree in Civil Engineering so that I can easily work in UK and gain UK Chartered Engineer status.

The best option for me could be to study in UNIM (University of Nottingham in Malaysia) if Civil Engineering course were available there, just like the UK campus. It could be the best option because I could have the opportunity to pay much less tuition fees (in Malaysian currency) and much lower living expenses than studying in the UK campus throughout the course. On top of that, it’s possible to get the Uni of Nottingham (UK) degree by studying in Malaysia campus. I have contacted UNIM recently regarding the availability of my preferred course and they’ve said that the course will be available from September’ 2006 onwards.

I have completed my A’ levels this year and I don’t want to take a gap year. So I have to join some other uni/coll in Malaysia for January’ 2006 intake.

At present, I have INTI College Malaysia in my mind for studying UK Degree Transfer Programme.

INTI College is a leading multi-campus institution of higher learning in Malaysia that continues to chart the course of distinction through its provision of quality academic programmes. As a pioneer of internationalizing education in Malaysia, INTI provides greater access to higher education through links with reputable universities in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

UK Degree Transfer programme Civil Engineering aims at preparing students to complete their degree studies in the UK. The partner universities of INTI in UK are:

Ø Aston University
Ø Heriot-Watt University
Ø Liverpool John Moores University
Ø Oxford Brookes University
Ø University of Aberdeen
Ø University of Birmingham *
Ø University of Bradford *
Ø University of Dundee
Ø University of Edinburgh
Ø University of Essex
Ø University of Hertfordshire *
Ø University of Hull *
Ø University of Leeds *
Ø University of Liverpool
Ø University of Manchester
Ø University of Nottingham
Ø University of Plymouth
Ø University of Portsmouth
Ø University of Strathclyde
Ø University of the West Of England Bristol

Studying in INTI, I’ll be able to transfer to one of the above UK unis in Year 2 or even directly to Year 3* of Civil Engineering. Besides that, I can even apply to non-partner UK unis. Recently, I contacted them through email and in reply University of Bristol, University of Cardiff, University of Southampton, and University of Surrey have assured me that they can admit students from INTI directly in Year 2.

Although I don’t aim to gain a Malaysian degree in Civil Engineering, I’m still concerned about the reputation of the uni/coll in Malaysia where I want to study in. As far as I know, INTI is a good college, but some people say it’s not very famous. One TSR member has suggested me to consider Taylor’s College Malaysia, and another has suggested me to join HELP University.

Taylor’s College also offers my preferred course and its main partner uni is Birmingham and the students are able to study 2+2 MEng programme or 1+2 BEng programme. Students also have the option to pursue their studies at any of the renowned consortium universities in the UK.

Consortium of British Universities:

- University of Bath
- University of Exeter
- University of Leicester
- University of Surrey
- University of Warwick
- University of Newcastle upon Tyne
- Loughborough University
- Cardiff University
- Queen Mary College, University of London
- University of Sheffield

Both INTI and Taylor's are colleges that offer UK Degree Transfer Programmes. But so far I haven't found any university in Malaysia that offers the same programme. HELP uni only runs American Degree Transfer Programme but I'm interested only in UK transfer ones.
So, I would highly appreciate if anyone here in TSR suggest me a good Malaysian uni that offers my preferred course.

Now if I compare INTI and Taylor's, then I can say that I have more options in INTI as it has many partner unis. Nevertheless, I want to know which college is more famous.
So please tell me how would you rate INTI College and Taylor's College.

Is there any other College, better than INTI and Taylor's, that offers my preffered course?

Is there any league table showing the ranking for Malaysian Universities/Colleges?

I will be grateful to you if you kindly guide me to choose the best uni/coll.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ashique. As far as i concern, there is no league table showing the ranking for Malaysian Universities/Colleges. Have you look through HELP UNIVERSITY COLLEGE? It is famous with engineering course too. In my opinion HELP is still better than the other two colleges. At least HELP is a UNIVERSITY COLLEGE NOW. Its study environment is quite good too. Is that you must study in UK? USA is good at engineering too. You can try sunway college as well.

Oh Ya! You can search your preferred course and instituition from this website too. All the best! Good Luck!

hi eugenia... thanx for writing here. In answer to your question, I'd say both USA and UK are equally good places to study Engineering. However, engineering job prospects in UK are much higher than that in US coz Britain is in short of qualified engineers for which they offer special work-permits to non-EU citizens. On top of that, UK starting salaries for engineers (esp. civil) are much higher than any other jobs in UK. Moreover, it only takes 3 years to complete BEng and/or 1 more year to do MSc/MEng in UK, whereas in US four years are needed to complete Bachelor's degree. Studying for a British degree in Malaysia and UK, I can save one year and, therefore, save the extra money which I would need in USA.

Always having been studied in a British school in my country, I prefer UK unis to be the 1st choice for my higher studies.

do NOT do engineering in a malaysian university, trust me, i'm a malaysian!
however, we do have excellent private colleges which offer twinning programmes with many UK universities, i'm sure you already know this.. personally i would advise you to go for taylors college, as far as i know it's THE top private college in malaysia.

do ask me if you have any more questions..

hope this helps!

hi... thanx for posting. Could you please explain why do you advise me not to study Engineering in a Malaysian uni? What if I can study the twinning programme in the uni?

BTW, how do you rate INTI College Malaysia?

O. I understand your situation now. Im going to study in LondonMet and doing film and broadcast production. I have been studying in HELP for less than half year. So i know a little bit about the environment there.

Ok. Seriously, I dont think Taylor is the Top College in Malaysia. What i can say is different instituitions are good at different courses. If see the college as a whole, i would say HELP = Taylor = Inti = Sunway. Four of them are equally high-rated.

Now this sounds like an unbiased opinion . Yes... I also agree that different instituitions are good at different courses.

The reason I like INTI College in the first place is that I'm quite impressed by watching it's video clip. Located in Bandar Baru Nilai and in the vicinity of the Multimedia Super Corridor and Malaysia Silicon Valley, the main campus is a vibrant and ultra-modern 82-acre landscaped campus equipped with the latest ICT infrastructure and facilities.

INTI
College is the first educational-oriented establishment to receive the industry excellence award for its record in the export of education.

A 14-million Ringgit full-storied Learning Resource Centre is the only multimedia environment of its kind among the private colleges in Malaysia. It houses a library, a multimedia centre, a staff development centre, lecture theatres, and workstations to facilitate learning and research work.

Covering 110,000 sqft, the Student Centre is an ideal place where students relax, socialize, and obtain daily assistance. It houses various amenities indispensable to campus life, including a Bakery, a Cyber Café, a Book Centre, a Cafeteria, a Clinic, a Mini Market, a number of Retail & Service Outlets, an Automatic Teller Machine, a Prayer Room (for Muslims), and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Now my question is: Will I find all the above facilities if I join Taylor's College?

[I know that the answer of my question can be given by a student from Taylor's College, but I'll still appreciate if anyoneesle could give me some info.]

Am i supposed not to reply you because im not a taylor college student. LOL...I'm just kidding..I will stil try my best to help you

Ok. Honestly, Nilai is a boring place. It is away from Kuala Lumpur for about 45 minutes although it is nearer to KLIA...haha...I dont reckon that it has a good social life and you will get bored very soon once you live in there...

You will be based in Bandar Baru Nilai campus or Subang Jaya campus? Of course you will get all the facilities you mentioned in Taylor College.Bandar Baru Nilai campus is a more centralised campus where you can find everything you want in that little place. However, Taylor college is like most of the London Uni. Every deparment is located in different places. Somehow, you can find taylor college in Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Cheras. They are located in big towns. At least you can a lot more happenings within these areas. If you are based in Nilai Subang Jaya Campus, then you will be better. Taylor College is just next to it and some departments are just nearby. There are a lot of shops around that area. It is a very lively area where you can find a Bakery, a Cyber Café, a Book Centre, a Cafeteria, a Clinic, a Mini Market, a number of Retail & Service Outlets, an Automatic Teller Machine, a Prayer Room (for Muslims) which is basically a mosque nearby. Regarding the Olympic-sized swimming pool, you will find it in Bukit Jalil Sports Stadium where it was a Commenwealth Game competition venue in 1998. So it has international quality. It is not far away from Subang Jaya where you can use a highway to reach the stadium directly.

Hope they do help you out a little bit although i know they didnt help a lot.

Thank you soooo much for the info .... now I've got some idea about Taylor's College.

Are you 100% sure about all the facilities in INTI College and in Taylor's College being the same? I've browsed through the website but it doesn't say much about those facilities.

Actually, I'm a bit confused about the location of my preferred course in INTI. One of the INTI staffs from Penang campus told me that UK Degree Transfer Programme (Civil Engineering) is only offered in the main campus which is located at Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. However, I've found out from the website that the School of Engineering & Built Environment of INTI is located at Sarawak campus (in Kuching).

Why not you call them up and ask properly? If you are going to study in Kuching is even worse where Nilai is far more nearer to Kuala Lumpur. You can expect a lot of things to be happened there. :p:
Im pretty sure they have library and all that. Regrading those cafe, bookshop, bakery, etc, i am 100% sure you can find them near taylor Subang campus and all of them are within walking distance. You dont need to worry so much. You better email the co-ordinators from both colleges and ask them send you the module lists. So that you can compare the Engineering course that provided by two different colleges and see which one is better and more attractive for you.

Yeah... I've tried several times to call INTI today, but I coundn't get connected (maybe becoz the phone line is busy). I'll definately make sure about the exact location of my preferred course there.

I don't have much idea about Malaysia coz I've never been there before. Whenever I get to watch any Malaysian video clip I always see the Twin Towers being focused  and that makes me feel Kuala Lumpur is the most important place of the country. Well... it should be the most happening place coz it's the capital city afterall .

I know someone who is studying in Swinburne University Malaysia campus, located in Sarawak. I haven't heard him complaining about the place coz he's enjoying living and studying there. But I'm aware that you, being a Malaysian national, know a lot more things about your own country and can give me proper advises. So I'm curious to know the things that I won't find in Kuching or anywhereelse far from Kuala Lumpur.

Hope you don't mind replying and sorry for asking too many questions.

EDIT: are you in London Met uni now?

Nop. Im still in Kuala Lumpur at the moment. Im going off this saturday. Kuala Lumpur is fulled of night life. I've never lived in Kuching before. So, I cant exactly tell you how it is like. As you know, KL is the capital city of Malaysia. You will get the things that other states dont have in KL. Basically, you will find everything you want in here. Kuching is not that bad though because it is still the capital city of Sarawak. Nevertheless, Kuala Lumpur is still far more better than Kuching in terms of living. Em, I dont know how's your ability on time management. If you are good at that, Kuala Lumpur shouldnt have no problem for you. If you are not, you might get distracted by the busy life in Kuala Lumpur and Kuching is a nice place for you stay away from that. Hence, i would say you will get a quite good result in Kuching.

By the way, do you want to chat with me via MSN? If you would like to, you can leave me your email in my inbox. Then, i shall see you there. Bye and have a nice day!
