LAW degree, class marks

I read that your overall degree grade is determined by the highest four class marks in your 3 year course. This was on the ucl law society web site, which means EVERY year counts towards my final degree grading.

Am i interpreting this rightly?

No, well unless it has all changed with the changes in the degree structure. For my year anyway, the first year results don't count (except for trying to get vac schemes). Then there's 4 modules in the second year and 4 in the 3rd. If you go abroad for a year then you just have to pass I think. Anyway, there's 4 modules in each year and you need 4/8 at the degree you classify. So to get a 2.1 you need only get 4. Sounds easy, but they mark seriously hard!

So it's possible for everyone to get at least a 2.1?

I was worried that we'd be in competition like people are for firsts...

You are not in competition for the First Class LLB either! The same rules apply - anyone who gets firsts in four papers out of the eight, will be awarded a First Class LLB. If ten of you get it, all ten will get the First Class LLB. If only one student gets it, then only he will graduate with a First.

Well I remember a very long thread about this ages ago in which I said people weren't in competition for firsts, but everyone else said they were. :p: I think what they were saying is that most law schools would be reluctant to give out too many firsts, so if there are a number of very good students in a particular year the bar would be raised.

That may be true only with regards to the borderline cases (eg. four 1sts, four 2.2s OR three 1sts, five 2.1s). But it is quite clear - if you get four 1sts and four 2.1s, they will certainly not deny you your First Class LLB.

Furthermore, the problem of 'too many' does not really arise. Let's be realistic - it is hard enough to get a first in ONE paper, let itself FOUR! A very large majority of students (even at top law schools like Oxbridge, UCL, LSE, King's) go through their entire degree without ever scoring a first in a SINGLE paper. Therefore, there really won't be 'too many' people getting four 1sts! :-)

Gotcha.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't ten papers used to determine honours class at UCL? You do four subjects in year 1, but five in 2 and 3, dont you?

That's what it says in the prospectus; maybe it's new for our year?

Yes, you are right. You will be under the new system - which is much better, in my opinion!

So I guess you would need to get 1sts in five papers now out of those ten, in order to graduate with a First.

Cool... have the second/third year courses been condensed down, or is our workload more than in previous years?

No the workload won't be more in that what you have to cover in each subject is reduced. However you will have to get to grips with another subject which might make it slightly more work.
