* Another Harvard rejectee/Cambridge acceptee *

It's not the damned SATs, it's the damned extracurriculars and legacies. Lots of people get perfect SAT scores and still get rejected.

Another? who else?

In my case it was those SATs, I had like a month to prepare for 4 of them! and got well below the Harvard average.

But cambridge is cool though. And it's only 3 years as apposed to 4!

Interesting, which uni would you have chosen if you had been accepted by both?

Wait, what did you get on your SATs then? (I'm curious because Cambridge students don't usually take the SATs...and uh 'prepare' for SATs? What's that..........?)

(I got in the 1400s out of 1600--this was the old version--without prepping (I'm not that stupid)---...but I didn't apply to Harvard because frankly I didn't think I'd get in especially since their average is what, 1600? 40000?, although I am going to for grad.)

We have to 'prepare' for them - not because we are stupid, but because the style of test is different to what A Level sudents are used to...usually in an A Level exam you have to do a tad bit more than colouring in boxes...me thinks that Harvard applicants would have to prepare for an A Level too, if they sat one.

Saying that i got 1580/1600 on the old SAT...no prepping and no revision and still became a reject.

huh...so you're saying that you do have to prep for them, but then said you didn't?

hmmmmm ....

Anyway, I believe that most people who score over 1550 usually do prep for them at least a little despite what they say...due to personal experiences of people who do score above 1550.

A guy from my high school in my year got accepted to Harvard with a scholarship for $45,000 with a 1510 SAT. However he was also a mathematics genius, won state awards for math, and got accepted to Cal-tech on a FULL ride scholarship too. He's a ****ing genius, but he only scored a 1510!

However, the grading of the SATs seem a wee bit odd to me: first time I took writing I got a 720 without preparation. next time I took it, I got an 800, without preparation in between the two exams...which means SAT scores mean NOTHING AT ALL.

P.S. You needn't be so defensive & touchy. I wasn't implying that you were retarded (but now that you responded like that eh.....jp), just that SAT scores in the 1400s are sh*tty...durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Why go to Harvard if you can go to Cambridge? Can you even study my subject there?

We don't do prep as in loads of practice papers...but i did look over one past paper to see what sort of style of question i'd get. I DID NOT learn lists of words...and the maths is GCSE maths...hardly something to swat.
EDIT: The whole SAT system is just a way the College Board can make a whole lot of money IMO...why doesn't the US have a proper end of 12th grade exam the way we have A Levels,/IB/Abitur/French/European Bac etc... ?
EDIT 2: or alternately make APs cumpulsory for those in 12th grade...and make exams essay based as opposed to millions of MCQs.

It was a while ago so I don't actually remember the exact score, but it was in the 89th percentile, ie better than 88 percent of people who took it.

Yeah, prepare as in see what it's all about and actually book the test at a test centre. You have no idea how much hassle it was to actually get to somewhere where I can actually sit the test. And as for actually getting hold of a past paper, well that took about 2 weeks, cos people around me were like: "SATs, what are they?" And people in the local book stores here were like "Princeton Review? Is that fiction or non fiction? I'm afraid it's not on our database." And English is my second language, so taking the SATs for me would be comparable to you taking uni entry tests in French, or whatever language you study as a second language. Since you got 1400, which is actually the Harvard average (i think) I'm pretty sure you aren't stupid, but try taking the uni entry exams used on another continent, where a completely different system is used, and in your second language, not to mention completing applications and interviews for 2 very competitive unis within the same time period, and you'll have an idea how much fun it was.

Harvard usually give more financial aid to internationals, sometimes up to $42 000. Cambridge would cost a whole lot more as most scholarships are a few thousand pounds, if you're lucky enough to get one. Can you do theology in Harvard? Not sure I doubt it.

I think for people who are certain which subject they really want to do, cambridge is definitely better.
