Chances for MPhil Management at Cambridge

Hello,

I just created this thread to know my chances to get into the “MPhil in management” program at the University of Cambridge. I'm also interested into the MPhil in technology policy, so if you could also tell me which one would suit me best.

I am currently completing my BSc in micro-engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). I have done some of extra-curriculars, but as a result my GPA is pretty low. Here is how my application would look like:

ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE
- Visiting Research Student in a lab. at the University of Tokyo
- Summer Research Assistant in a lab. at EPFL
- Industrial Internship at a Swiss Manufacturing School

BUSINESS EXPERERIENCE
- now Vice-President of a company based at EPFL

ACADEMICS
- 1st year GPA around 75%, 2nd year GPA around 65% (passing grade at EPFL)
EPFL is ranked number 2 engineering school in Europe (behind Cambridge) by ARWU and 8th in Europe according to THE QS.
- Cambridge Summer School
- IELTS: 8/9

(I would also have three academic referees - all professors at EPFL - one being Cambridge alumni, one being the former director of my department)

I look forward to receiving your opinion.

Cheers,

Actually, as I expect to receive my BSc next July, I would apply for entry in 2011.
Would you recommand early application (before october)?

Thanks for the answers!

I am still wondering though in which master's degree I would be most likely accepted: technology policy or management?
What kind of profile are they looking exactly?

By the way, would anyone know how the MPhil in Innovation, Strategy & Organisation and the MPhil in Management Science & Operations compare to the two masters aforementioned?

I really appreciate your help,
Cheers,

It's not a particularly good MSc in Management course, and EPFL is not the second best engineering school in Europe.

Lol @ the 1:1 requirement. Typical Cambridge (misplaced) snobbery.

Even though there is no way of knowing for sure, don't you think all the students studying that course have a 1?

Perhaps, but the reputation of the course just doesn't justify this. It's Cambridge's loss anyway : they're depriving themselves of many interesting people who'll swell the applicant ranks at LSE, HEC etc. Oxford's decent, so is LSE, but I've always seen Cambridge as a bunch of academically stuck-up snobs.

I'm guessing you missed a 1?

You guessed wrong (see my sig above). But good job thinking that no-one is capable of taking a step back from their own experience to consider someone else's situation. Kind of reminds me of people who criticise "Champagne Socialists" : because only a tramp can understand the plight of the poor.

There is a sea of 1:1 holders with interesting backgrounds. Getting a 1.1 does not mean that you are automatically accepted into an MPhil

Hi Everyone!

I applied for the program in September, and my application was sent to the department on October 10th. I have heard that they can take a LONG time to give out decisions, does anyone know if that is accurate?

Here is my profile..

BA (Honors) International Studies with a 3.92/4.0 GPA (have taken lots of honors classes) from University of Miami (Top 50 tier 1 school in the US) I am a member of the honors program here, and also an NCAA college athlete. I have had two internships, one with IMG World Group and one with the Sony Ericsson WTA tour.

I have no idea what my chances are of getting in, but I would love to hear anyones opinions.. I am hoping they weigh GPA's heavily..:s-smilie:

Thanks guys!
