Prescription Charges

Hello all

I'm on regular medication and have been enjoying no prescription charges; as until May I was 18 and still in full time education. I have since turned 19, but when I went to the chemist last week to get my prescription they charged me £20 and told me I would need to fill in a form to get free prescriptions in the future.

Unfortunately I can't remember what this form was called. I have a feeling it was called 'HC1', but I'm not sure. Does anyone know?

yep just go to your local surgery and ask for one. Or you can get them from your college or uni.

the leaflet is HC11 you get to fill in a low income form which is a HC1 and then if you get it you get a certificate. You can obtain the form by ringing this number - 0800 555 777

The application form is called an HC1, the certificate is called an HC2. I got it just for minimising the costs of sight tests and visual prescriptions and to be honest it was a waste of time just because the money from student loan plus a small allowance from parents meant that I don't gain anything from using an HC2.
For prescriptions it will definitely help unless you have a chemist or dispensing GP in the family.

Yeah, you should get a HC1 form. The certificate, as someone said I think, it called HC2. If you're living purely off a student loan, you should definitely get one. If you get money from your parents, you are supposed to declare it on the form, and if it is a large enough amount then you might not get it. I can't remember what the cut off point is though.

If you live in Wales prescriptions are free for under 25's, thus cos I go to uni in Wales and am registered with a doc there I don't pay for prescriptions there. I do for the dentist though as that's back home in England. All the HC whatsit did for me when I was given one to fill in by th edentist was tell me that I had to pay up to the first £x of treatment. Since my regular check up was no way near that amout I've never bothered to fill one in since. I will do if it's needed though.
