I think Surrey has slightly higher entrance standards, but there's not much to pick between them. If you print off a load of different league tables you'll find some with Essex beating Surrey, some the other way around. Personally I'd say Essex was a slightly better University, with a slightly better reputation. But they are both decent, reputable Universities. In last year's 'Independent' league table Essex was ranked 25th and Surrey 30th. But in this years 'Times', Surrey was 37th and Essex was 43rd! I think Essex has a better postgraduate reputation and some excellent departments (Politics for example).

Yeah but that tells you **** all. Essex has an ugly campus and that's about all that I know off the top of my head that's useful. Academic reputation is useless unless about specific subjects

i wouldnt go to either in all honesty

I like Surrey's campus and it seems pretty good for physics/engineering/spacey sciencey stuff in general.

The medical building looks like something out of a sci fi movie.

Is it at the Oval or Chelmsford? Should be a good game either way, although hopefully Surrey will bat better than when I watched them against Middlesex.

One thing I do know: Surrey doesn't have much to offer for postgraduates in the Humanities. I looked into doing an MA there in Literature and they don't have one. Essex has some very good MA courses in Literature and History. I think their History and Politics departments are among the best.

In terms of general reputation Essex and Surrey are ok Universities- not up there with Nottingham, Durham etc but better than the ex Polytechnics. I think they are both members of the 1994 group (Essex definitely is) and both are usually ranked between 35th and 45th out of 122. They are comparable to Kent, Sussex and Reading etc.

Hi

I applied to both Essex and Surrey.

Surrey seems to come out better than Essex in the league tables but it is true that it really depends on the subject and what you are looking for in the course and the campus.

I am due to start a Sociology degree at Surrey in September but I did have Essex as my insurance. I would say to look into the course itself. Look at any optional modules too for your second and third years to see which you would find more enjoyable.

As to reputation it should be noted that Surrey has an excellent record for graduate employment, this is partly due to the work placement year that they offer. Again it depends what you are looking for in a university but for me employability was very important. Also, Essex is a small and somewhat isolated campus, much different to the Surrey campus. You should look at both and make your decision and bear in mind that reputation isn't always everything, it's what you make of your degree that counts.

I think it depends which league table you look at. I have seen Essex ranked much higher than Surrey. Essex, Surrey, Kent and Sussex all seem to move up and down quite a bit. I've seen Essex ranked everywhere from 25th to 50th out of 122.

That is very true which is why league tables shouldn't be taken as Gospel. All the more reason to visit unis and look at their courses and decide for yourself. :yep:
