Applying to university through ucas while at university

Hey

Basically this year I applied to do medicine but unfortunately I didn't get in anywhere, so in September I plan to go to my backup choice (Clinical Sciences at Bradford) mainly because theres the option to transfer through to Leeds med school if you perform well and pass an interview etc during the first year at Bradford.

What I was wondering is can I apply again through ucas for medicine while I'm studying at Bradford, is it completely not allowed or is it frowned up on or is there no problem with doing it? I've just finished my A-levels and I'm getting my results thursday (I'm hoping to have got 3 A's in maths biology and chem (possibly an A* in chem)) so if I do get these grades and it's allowed I would consider both going to Bradford and reapplying through ucas, as it will increase my chances of getting in.

Any advice people have on the subject would be greatly appreciated  . Thanks for your help!

thanks for that, very useful!

I did have one other question aswell:

If I got an interview (being very optimistic here) and hadn't mentioned being at bradford on my personal statement, should I say in the interview I am currently at ... uni doing a .. degree or should I not meniton it? Or is it best to just mention it in the personal statement? Thanks again!

The uni will know you're at uni, because you have to mention it on the UCAS application ... so it's not a big secret, but best not to dwell on the past in your PS (focus on why the new course, not why not the old one .)

They may bring it up, it may be relevant in a response to an interview question, or your current uni may not fit in at all. Just go with the flow, really.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THIS

If you omit the fact that you are at university on your UCAS form, you are committing an offence and this constitutes fraud. the medical schools WILL find out and you WILL be subject to fitness to practice hearings by the general medical council. you are not only jeopardising your 2011 application but also any future application to medical school and graduate entry as UCAS will blacklist you and inform all medical schools (and even universities in general if you apply for other courses) so you will never gain entry in this country and it will be on your record so employers will find out too.

honesty is HUGE part of what being a doctor is about and if you are prepared to lie and scheme your way into medical school i believe this is disgusting behaviour and you should be reconsidering career paths. if you were really committed to medicine you would either take a gap year and reapply or do the degree and apply as a graduate.

google the case of Dr Prabhu Satya - a doctor who hid the fact that he was doing a degree while applying to medical school and look at what happened to him... 12 years of work down the drain

BTW - if you do bradford clin sci you can actually apply to the standard 5yr course. But on your new UCAS form where it asks for a list of all educational establishments you have attended and qualifications you would declare here that you are at bradford uni, put your degree result as pending and take it from there.

Thanks for the advice  just one thing: sorry to sound stupid but when you said I would have to mention being at uni on the ucas app, do you mean actually on my personal statement, or just in the details section where you enter grades etc?

Iit's just a question on the application. Can't remember quite where it is and what form it takes, but there is a question about 'are you currently at university?' in there somewhere.

You don't have to mention it on your PS at all, if you don't want to.

just to clarify, I wasn't intending to lie and scheme my way into anywhere I was just checking what the best apparoach is, I didn't actually know how you go about a situation like this, hence why I posted the thread. Thanks for informing me though and I certainly will mention it now. The reason I don't particularly want to take a gap year are I don't want to take time out and stop learning because I would prefer if possible to carry on learning new material and avoid forgetting things I've learnt in my A-levels. Also if I did go on a gap year I wouldn't know what to do to make me really stand out.

The last thing you said, about applying whilst at Bradford, do you mean for the 5 year degree at other med schools? I would declare I was there on my application but one of my queries was do you have to mention it on your personal statement also? (Im just wondering this as if it is not required I could use the space to talk about something else). Lastly sorry if I offended you by what I said but like I mentioned I'm not trying to deceive anyone.

OP isn't talking about omitting the fact that that they are at university already - from what I can make, fully intending on answer the 'are you currently at uni?' question honestly - just not mentioning it on their personal statement.

Which in fact is a bad idea, because the point of a PS is to talk about how much you want to do this course, not why your current one is so bad you want to jump ship.

it's ok. im just trying to make you completely aware of the pitfalls of doing this as way too many people think it is a viable option when it is not. quite a few people in your position have done this before and it is a lot to take on emotionally when they get kicked out so it is best to avoid it in the first place.

i can understand about you not wanting to gap. you can apply to 5 year courses (standard a100) whilst doing bradford clin sci. I think UEA, durham, keele have accepted people in the past so email departments. however you may have trouble getting a reference because AFAIK bradford will not write the UCAS reference in sept/oct before the med deadline so you have to get it from your old school. also, a word of advice - make sure leeds do not find out about you applying to 4 others as i have heard they can negatively discriminate against you for not sticking with them only.

I would avoid mention the clin sci year on your ps. only talk about it if you get asked at interview - realistically if you are doing your ps now, what can you say about clin sci before starting?

well that post is there to warn him just in case he was thinking about it and any other applicant reading this. i know of 2 people this year alone who were kicked out for doing this and it has ruined their medical careers before they even started. far too many people think you can just lie on ucas forms and pull the wool over admissions tutors eyes.

Thanks for making me aware of the outcomes.

This is just to confirm then:

I must mention being at Bradford on my ucas application but it's not necessary to mention it on my actual ps (just better to leave it and if I do get an interview see if it's brought up?).

Is it acceptable to mention being at Bradford but using references from my 6th form?

You said make sure Leeds do not find out but would it be best to say I have applied through ucas if leeds interview me? (As lieing is the worst thing I could do).

The only reason I could think as to why uni's might want me to mention being at uni on my ps is my course starts 1st Sept so if my ps goes in after then they may expect me to comment on it (as the last date is Oct 15th for med apps).

Thanks for your help

3- AFAIK the leeds interview won't be until quite late in the cycle (i think april, may, june ish time - research this though) and the main interview cycle for normal a100 entry is nov-march. you have no reason to mention to leeds about your other apps if they are unsuccessful because leeds won't know about them so in essence you are not lying if they don't know in the first place. you will probably have the outcome of your ucas app before leeds interview you
4 - they won't expect you to comment on it. you would have only been on the course for 3/4 weeks before the med deadline comes round and the 4 unis you pick will understand this once they realise that you are a first year. if they ask in interview, that is when you talk about this unless you have a burning desire to mention it on your ps

Well the Leeds interview is based on your performance throughout Bradford anyway so I assume it will be near the end of the year so they have an idea of how you are doing.

Thanks once again for helping me out

I think it is best to explain it at the interview, because if in future the university should find this out and it becomes an issue, it is possible that you might be dismissed. That's just my opinion. Sandra Mcfarlane.
