Okay, I just failed my Grade 5 Violin.

Hi,
Just recieved the news that I missed the pass mark of my Grade 5 violin by 4 marks :frown: I don't yet have the sheet which includes the inclusive marks I got for each part, will be getting it tomorrow when I see my music teacher at results day. However, my violin teacher is thinking of writing a letter to ABRSM as she feels that the string players (along with me) who were examined in this session have been marked incredibly harshly (none of us passed, basically).

I was just wondering, is it known of for ABRSM to take into consideration these factors and give me a remark? Or will I have to resit the exam again (and pay the £50 fee :shifty:).

:console: I'm afraid i've never heard of anyone going for remarks... and i think it would be quite unlikely as well, how would they remark it? unlesss they have a video performance of your exam (i realise that this isn't helpful  )

I didn't know you could get remarks.

I failed my grade 5 saxophone. But mainly because i dropped it on the floor during the exam, the mouthpiece cracked so i couldn't play it properly. Woops.

I'm not sure, sorry, but I love your username. Good luck.

I'm not sure that you can get remarks....Don't they mark you piece by piece and then oral and sight reading?

It happens, all too often actually. Try again next term.

Unlucky, try again and prepare yourself more for next time.

You may be able to appeal but I doubt anything will come of it.

Ahh okay, thanks everyone. I just wondered if it was possible

Just out of interest, now that you have your mark sheet - was it just one section that was dreadful, or did you miss pretty much every section by a mark or so?

I'm an instrumental teacher and have never asked for a re-mark or heard of anyone else doing so, but if your teacher is thinking of doing it anyway then you may as well go along with it. Bear in mind there may be a fee for it though, so you might be better off just doing again and preparing more thoroughly than last time.

If it makes you feel any better I failed by Grade 2 guitar exam but that was mainly because I didn't revise on the chords enough.

Sorry for the late reply.
Basically, its completely the opposite of what I expected. I got around 15/18 for each Aural, Scales and Sight reading (this is where I thought I'd messed up). I was completely ready for it - this is the problem I had. Where I lost marks were my pieces, I didn't get above 20 for any of them (it was something like, 16/17/18 for each of the pieces). This is what we don't understand - as my music teacher was playing my piano accompaignment for me and was listening - and said it was enough for a merit. My teacher also commented that some of the comments don't add up with the marking, for example on my first piece, the only negative comment about it was some bowing, and said the rest was spectacular? but only gave me 18/30 for it :s-smilie:. I could understand his marking if there was a much better reason on paper for the low marks but no, just a few minor problems with bowing. My teachers looking to sort it out in September when I go back to college. Apparently, out of the 30 or 40 entries this time in my college, no one achieved above 110/150, and all the violinists gained a fail (including some grade 1's and grade 2's.) But I'll have to see what happens in September.

Yes, it definitely sounds fishy (though scales and sightreading are both out of 21, not 18...) Good luck with it

Ahh, yeah. I didn't have the sheet on me when I wrote that, was just trying to remember from memory! Sorry

But I'll see what happens, thanks.

15/18 for aurals is good, equivalent to a high merit/distinction for that section. Just to look on the bright side
