alternatives to the pill

I may be the victim of media scare here but I'm really not keen on going on the pill. Various reasons have put me off, one being that I'd rather not go through depression, acne, nausea and weight gain untill I find which one suits me best, another being the unproven but relevant link to cancer. My mum took some form of it in the 60's when they were so desperate to get it out on the market that they didn't know much about it, and is convinced that it contributed to her developing skin cancer (they later took the one she used off the market)

So whats the alternative's? I'm really queazy about the thought of trying the coil for obvious reasons and my friend's tried the jag which she found to have the same level of side affects as the pill.Another girl I know uses the implant inserted under your arm and she swears by It, you only have to remember to get it "renewed" so to speak 3 years later, ofcourse like everything It has its risks too.

So what do you find suits you, or someone you know? I'm going to the family planning clinic soon to discuss it with a nurse but I'd like to be able to ask her points which my friends and maybe some of you can raise. thank u to anyone who helps out

You can get contraceptive injections too...

But the things you were talking about with regard to the pill, i didn't suffer at all from depression, acne or nausea but I did put on half a stone, but it's easy enough to lose again. Obviously this will be different for different people but you generally don't suffer all the side effects, they are just legally obliged to tell you possible side effects.

Have a look through that very informative thread by lessthanthree.
Really, any hormonal contraception will have similar side effects to the pill.

yeah I still think It's not for me though, I probably just think this way because horror stories about the pill are generaly more documented than any other form of contraception and with my mums suspisions plus a family friend suffering blood clots from it its givin me the jeebies. I take your point about them all being similar though, theyre all pretty much pumping chemicals into ure body i guess-no sure winner

I was on the Pill for over a year and the only side effect I had was increased appetite. I didn't gain much weight because I exercised. I definitely was not depressed. Also, even if you got depressed you could just stop the Pill. I wouldn't suggest implant or injection if you're concerned about side effects because you can't just stop those.

I keep talking about this product, it's coming out in the UK next year, called the NuvaRing. It's a ring you put in the vagina that releases hormones, you leave it in for three weeks, then remove. I'm about to start it and my friends have raved.

You'll have to wait until 2006 unfortunately...

if you reserach the different types of pill well enough or discuss with a nurse at the family planning clinic what side effects you want to avoid and what you want to gain from being on the pill you are likely to not have to go through all those side effects until you 'find the right one'...

there is a thing which you can get implanted under the skin which contains hormones and is one fo the latest forms of contraception, i know its avaliable for both men and women as we had a discussion about it in biology in march time... i don't know any details on it but it might be worth asking your gp?
