building surveying vs architecture

okay i was wondering if anyone could answer a couple of questions pls.
first of all, after looking at building surveying courses (environmental construction surveying in particular) i got the impression that building surveying in a way has a lot of similarities to architecture, just minus the design aspects. can anyone confirm this?
also, what are the employment prospects like for surveyors?

thanks everyone!

Building Surveying is a report based degree. You analyse and write reports on things. No creativity is needed just a sound method of work.

Architecture is a very broad degree, one day you might be analyzing a text, the next day painting a picture, the next day learning what passive ventilation is, the next day trying to describe in less than 50 words what "space" is, the next day calculating the output of a light and how much of that light reaches a surface 10m away and it's spread, the next day measuring a building accurately, the next day building a city model to better understand how a city works, the next day designing a building for that city, the next day learning to use a new graphics package, the next day you might be doing bending moment calculations, the next day you might be learning how to take a good photo, the next day creating instructions for someone to build one of your designs, the next day putting together a video to describe the feeling of "place", the next day you might be building a display case and painting it and the next day you might be writing a final design report on your completed project.

If all that stuff only took a day I'd be extremely happy but it never does and then you have to add in about a million other tasks for that assignment and the assignments due for other modules.

What is building surveying? If it is the same as Surveying in Civil Engineering, it is awfully tedious.. Architecture sounds far more interesting.

Building surveyors provide professional advice on all aspects of property and construction. They work on site with new buildings and are concerned with the aftercare and performance of existing buildings. This is a very wide field and may include advising on various aspects of buildings at different stages, including:

* design;
* maintenance;
* repair;
* dilapidations;
* refurbishment;
* restoration;
* sustainability.

so, does anyone know anything about job prospects with a building surveying degree? is there more work available than for architects?
also, would it be possible to do a bachelor in architecture and then do a pg degree in the field of surveying?
i was accepted for architecture this year and am just thinking about what else i can do with an architecture degree apart from pursuing the career path of an architect only to be unemployed in the end...

The thing is you don't need a building surveying degree to become a building surveyor so why bother, there are loads of vocational training courses for it. Every other job under the sun has greater job prospects than architecture at the moment. No point in putting yourself through hell if your long term goal isn't to be an architect.

there aren't as many graduate jobs for building surveying, not as bad as architecture but still pretty lousy. and yeah, any graduate can be a building surveyor with a 9 month/1 year post-grad diploma (which i think accounts for over half of all building surveying graduates).

If you want to be a Chartered Building Surveyor you're going to need a degree in building surveying accredited by the RICS. Sure, there are other routes available like the Senior Professional Routes for people who have been grandfathered into the business but for most people you're going to need that degree.
