i have a girlfriend who has red hair, but when she was young (like 10) she had like blonde hair

i had black hair all my life

Ok now if me and my gf were to have a kid after we get married, she has red hair, i have black hair, what colour would my kids hair turn out to be??? sorry a bit of a weird question just wondering

Well this is crazy.

I'm guessing they would be dark haired. But ya never know. Does it matter to you then?

Either colour, or somewhere in between. Genetics isn't always that easy

Reply 3

Why does it matter so much?

Reply 4

it all depends on your genes. i'd probably assume black is dominant.

so if your homo dominant then all your children would have black hair.

however if your hetero black then there is a 50:50 chance of getting black/red hair.
but it's not really that simple (i'm prob completely wrong) there are random mutations and different ways the genes can join up. (load of crap and really confusing)
why the hell do you wanna know neway?

black

I reckon lightish or medium brown to begin with, slightly lighter as he/she gets older, then black will take over!

You lot really have no clue, do you?

no offence but you really shouldn't be concerned about a childs hair colour, hair colour makes them unique and helps to distinguish us as individuals. if your gene is homo-dominant then its more likely your children will have black hair as red hair is usually recessive however if you are hetro (which your children will be) there is more of a chance they willl have red hair, and your grandchildren actually will have a higher chance of having red hair than your own children......punnet squares come in so easily sometimes :p: xoxo

Eh, he might just be curious.

Your children won't have any hair.

Look at both of your family trees over a generation or two. You will get some idea of what genes the both of you have.

The fact that you have black hair and you girl has ginger hair doesn't mean any of your kids will have either of those, it just improves the odds.

My neighbours, are both brunettes, they have two ginger kids. Not even the grandparents are ginger (or the milkman for that matter!).

you cant tell what colour the childs hair will be...

It's not like mixing paints to see what the resulting colour is..it depends on genes. I don't think anyone here can actually predict what colour the child's hair would be.

The 'ginger gene' is recessive: providing that your 'black' is dominant, or homozygous, or does not contain any corresponding recessive gene, and assuming that genetic mutation does not take place, then all children conceived by your union shall find themselves salvaged, accordingly, from a fate worse than death.

That is what you wanted to hear, isn't it?

We would need to know the colours of all your grandparents and parents hair too, I believe, to come out with an even mildly accurate guess.

Don't say that; he might start giving us a family history on hair colour. :p:

You can express yourself better than I, but unfortunately, your knowledge of genetics is not as good as your linguistic abilities.

Guys, I know you've all done your pretty punnet squares for your GCSE/A-Level biology, predicting whether mice will be black/white, but human hair colour is not that simple - there's more than one gene involved and it depends on the hair colours of both families as well as the parents themselves. DeLBoy gave the best explanation.

well it really doesdepend on her grand parents and your grandparents, but the chanes are she will have genes that code for blonde hair and red hair, and if you have got irish in the family then you are likely to have genes which code for red and black, so the chances are if u were to ahev 4 kids you would have 2 balck haired and 2 ginger kids, but it all does depend on your grand parents and what genes they have given your parents!

I stand corrected.
