    They're in completely different parts of the country, so which part of Britain you would rather live is a better question to ask. I'd choose Durham, quiet, pretty but with Newcastle just 10mins away.

    i'd say durham, and not just cos i go there, because i know a lot of people doing history and they said it is a really good course, however i know nothing about York so can't give you a balanced opinion.

    like someone said i would just look at the course to see which one would be more suited to you!

    Nobody seems to have suggested Bristol... I thought it was in top5..maybe not best for history but a better reputation overall I think than Durham and the social life is excellent apparently.

    Can you be a little bit more specific? Why Dump ham??

    bristol. no one on these forums appears to like the place but it's much more highly rated than either of your other choices and much more competitive. really though you should look at the course specs and choose a uni which offers the areas of history you are actually interested in..

    It is;

    1) Overrated
    2) Full of rich kids
    3) Boring (the town that is)
    4) living of off Oxbridge rejects

    I don't mean any offence to anyone who goes there, and my view may be tainted by someone I knew who went there and hated every minute of it.

    Well i'm there now, and I love every minute of it. I don't think it's over-rated at all. I know plently of people who are neither rich nor Oxbridge rejects, more to the point, I know people there who have rejected Oxbridge offers to come to Durham, and in all my time there I have never been stuck for something to do, so I would hardly call it boring. As I am actually at the university, one would assume I have far more authority than you in what I am saying. I would choose Durham, it has an excellent history department, I know loads of people doing history there, and the course is supposed to be great. To be honest I think Bristol is better for sciences than history, I don't think the dept is that great there. Again though, I would say check what each university specialises in, that's one reason why I chose to Durham, because of the course.

    The ONLY people I know who have gone to Durham are Oxbridge rejects. In fact the two people I know who have now dropped out were both Oxbridge rejects and were reading history. Maybe coincidence, maybe not, but Bristol has a much better repuation and is also an attractive place. If it came down to Bristol having a better reputation but Durham being prettier I would say definitely go with Bristol.

    I think that the word "reject" should be thrown out as too negative. How about "second choicers" or B listers? I'm being serious...

    id choose york i think....ive applied to all of them and only got an offer from Durham so far so i might go there.
    Bristol is a really good uni - my brother is reading History there at the moment but it is true that it isnt the best history dept. but, he loves being there!!
    my only reason for not going there is that i live near Bristol anyway and want to get away.
    its a bit harsh to say Durham is full of rich/posh people - Bristol actually has a reputation for offering the most places to private schools
