You can't become a doctor without a medical degree...
(Psychiatrists can retire 10 years early, apparently...)

indeed, you can't become a psychiatrist without a medicine degree.

But you can be a psychologist or do councellor-type things with just a psychology or councelling degree. I think the difference is psychologists can't medicate...

Reply 3

Ah, thanks people, I would have loved to be a physchiatrist but I dont want to do a medical degree, plus I did no science alevels.

Reply 4

do you even know what a psyciatrist is or what they do

Can you become a physciatrist without doing a medical degree, because I dont want to do a medical degree and i havent taken any science alevels. If this is possible who do you go about it?

Are you taking the piss? You want to be a psychiatrist but you cant even spell it? God help your patients...

Reply 6

maybe becomming a counsellor of some kind would involve the bits of psychiatry that appeal to you without such a medical basis/background being essential?

Reply 7

Become a good one is my advice; I was really peeved by the useless help I got off one

Yes, my GP told me that recently. Frankly, I'm not surprised.

They are compelled to deal with people like me

Like everyone has said you can't become one without a medicine degree. If you want to get into that area, the best advice is from Saffie - do a psychology degree then specialise in Counselling Psychology. You don't need any science A Levels or even a Psychology A Level to start a Psychology degree so that could be the way forward. Good Luck :hugs:

Oh come off it! Any simple cursory investigation would have unearthed the fact that a psychiatrist is a member of the medical profession! Criticism of any type is due here I think.

She's only 16 years old, give her a break.

The spelling error could easily be a typo, and a certain person who questioned whether kirstinx even knew what a psychiatrist is also spelled it incorrectly.

Perhaps a psychiatrist would suggest that people who feel the need to flame others over little mistakes have deep seated insecurities.

Good one. I would also suggest that people take their private frustrations out on people in real life instead of on the internet. Yes, you may well end up in casualty but at least it would prove that you are not a coward

I would urge people to take the large age range catered for by this site into consideration.

She probably meant 'psychologist'.

only 16??????

I knew what a psychiatrist was several years younger than that. 16 year olds should be able to find out what a particular career entails, surely?

Reply 16

I think someone who is enthusiastic about a career / profession should be capable of finding out how to spell it.

Having said that, many people are confused about the exact roles of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and the like, and the situation isn't helped by the fact that psychology exists as a vocation AND as a non-vocational academic course!

A psychiatrist is a doctor.

You cannot become a psychiatrist without a medical degree, doofus!

I believe that to be a psychiatrist, you not only need a medical degree, but you would also have to be a doctor for ~10 years until you have recieved enough post-graduation experience/qualifications. Or something like that.

Psychiatry is a medical specialisation just like surgery or paediatrics, it requires the standard medical experience and postgraduate training.
