Citalopram/ propranolol

Hi,

Has anyone been prescribed both citalopram and propranolol to be taken at the same time? Im just worried as I was told to take 20mg of citalopram but had bad side effects after a week so they lowered it to 10mg. Now two weeks later I was to take propranolol 80mg for anxiety/stress as well as citalopram for depression...Im scared about what will happen when I take them both now after all the other side effects i've had! Im sure the dr knows what hes doing but still what side effects has anyone experienced from propranolol? and has anyone ever taken both at the same time? what were your experiences?

much thanks for replies in advance! xx

No experience of taking both, but just a note to say that citalopram and propranolol are very diferent medications and work to combat anxiety via entirely different modes - and are relatively safe to be taken together

Propranolol is actually an old-fashioned blood pressure/heart medication (beta blocker), whereas citalopram is a newer antidepressant (SSRI). Whilst there is a noted interaction in that citalopram increases the amount of certain beta-blockers in the system, this is not noted to be the case for propranolol specifically and so is safe. However both medications have their side effects, and there is some considerable overlap, so there is a chance that your side effects may return, though its impossible to say for sure.

If your GP thinks they may benefit you, then I'd suggest he/she knows better than the internet people, but if you have concerns the GP or pharmacist should be happy to discuss these with you (certainly I know I would want to chat with you if you were my patient and something I'd prescribed made you concerned enough to ask a question on an internet forum). And certainly if you start takinmg the meds and experience side effects, let the GP know - many people have reactions to these meds which make them unable to take one or both - but there are number of different options when dealing with anxiety/depression (both other meds, therapy, psych, etc, etc) and I'm sure if you work together with the GP and are open and honest about your valid concerns that you will find a treatment that suits you

I've taken these at the same time over the last year - no side effects whatsoever. Apparently citalopram has anti-anxiety/panic properties but on its on and in isolation, for me, citalopram has done nothing to help in this respect. Propranolol, on the other hand, works very well in terms of relieving the symptoms of anxiety and panic. My dose of citalopram was and is, 20mg per day, and I use very little propranolol when I need to, as I find I only need a very tiny dose of it to help me, e.g. a quarter of one tablet.

For me, citalopram and propranolol haven't clashed whatsoever.
