I start university next month but from being in the country my whole and me being black as well, there are no issues of racism that I have encountered in my lifetime when it comes to meeting people and making friends. A lot of people will be open at university and will just want to make friends, race won't come into it at all.

Most likely depends on where you go.
I'm not sure it's frequent but it's definitely existant.

muslim girls, nigerians and indians tend to near-strictly socialise with people of their culture, defecating on the social purpose of uni: breaking the cultural barrier and learning to appreciate and discover each other regardless of race and social class.
Try teaching this to kids who have been taught that black people are inferior filthy and evil; that white people are outsiders that are too stupid to understand other cultures and that muslims are fanatics that blow up

Race isn't something that crosses my mind when I make friends.

Yea there are loads of stereotypical people around which just ruins the whole integration of different people, you cannot be narrow minded going to uni
There are clear ethnopreferences, but I wouldn't go as far as saying there is racism.

People don't like mixing, it seems. But there isn't active prejudice.
I don't think of race when I'm making friends, but typically people tend to stick with people of their own race. It's not racism, people just don't want to mix.

But isn't racial selection active racism? :erm:

Same as above really. Surely something causes people not to want to mix, especially when judging one's ethnophysical appearance.

I logically can't FORCE one to be my friend, it's just I'd feel so hurt to be labelled and judged like that :cry2:
I may as well be a cow in an industrial farm in that case

I think most people have this attitude nowadays which is refreshing(though i'll admit i still feel a bit suspicious when i'm met with an open offer of friendship), however problems occur if one person in your circle of friends harbors secret racist attitudes and very slyly(so as to remain unnoticed by friends) makes the new addition to the group miserable... in which case they'll quietly leave rather than kicking up a fuss and if it happens often enough, just end up with sticking with their own 'kind' in future.

As a general rule, openly racist comments are not tolerated. If someone said something offensive, people would pull them up on it immediately, and they would soon run out of friends. That's not to say that no-one at university ever holds any racist views, but they will more likely be expressed in private.

A different matter entirely is whether people tend to group together with other people who speak the same language as them. Whilst this is unfortunate if it removes all form of interaction with other races, I think its both understandable and inevitable.

Whether there is a large degree of self segregation within language groups along race lines is not so clear cut. If the group is a distinct minority then this is understandable, or it may just be that people of the same race happen to share the same interests.

IMHO, Chinese students would have been a better example as Nigerians like most Africans tend to communicate with other Africans as well regardless.

Yes its called being human, we are drawn to our own to what we know and what we are used, to what is familiar. I guess its a tribal thing.

It occurs no matter your ethnicity, its not racism its just human
I am black and I am not concerned about racism at university since I'm not going to some country side etc. If someone is narrowminded and immature enough to treat me bad on the basis of my skin's melanin levels then I would have no reason to associate with them. I shouldn't even have to be concerned because that's just pathetic. Racial discrimination can exist though.

Of course there is racism in the UK universities just the same as there is racism in other parts of society.

But you should also recognise that there isn't a single country on this planet that doesn't have racism - so your choice is, how much are you prepared to tolerate before you say a specific country is not for you?

And you need to remember that racism works both ways. If you only speak or socialise with those of your own colour or language then you are effectively making yourself an outcast and being racist as well.
You should also note that there is no need to use text-speak on this forum - we're not chavs.
Race doesn't cross my mind when making friends...
There is racism everywhere, some places it is more subtle than in others. I know certain people like to "stick to their own" but there are reasons for that such as culture shock, language problems etc.

I believe most people are nice deep down, you just need to show them that you are a good person
