Suddenly not being able to take drink

I'm really worried about my friend (and no, this isn't me trying to cover up that it's about me  ) and was just wondering if anyone had experienced the same thing before I make sure she sees a doctor.

My friend is a pretty heavy drinker and has always been able to drink huge amounts without ever being sick, and it takes quite a lot to even get her drunk. She's quite short and slim and can drink more than me when I'm much taller. However, I started noticing about 3 weeks ago that after a couple of drinks whenever we went out, she would start feeling sick and go to the toilet. Then we'd either go home early as she was feeling ill or she would just stay and not drink. This in itself is weird as I have never seen her turn down an alcoholic drink before. We then went on holiday together for a week and every night we were out drinking. Every night she felt sick after a couple of drinks and went to the toilets to be sick. She was also sick one morning.

Last night it happened again, but this time I actually saw her being sick. Sorry for the description of it, but it was proper projectile vomiting. I confronted her about it saying she needed to see a doctor. She said that she has seen a doctor about it and he said it's just because she has a cold. I'm certain she made this up though as it doesn't sound likely and her cold started after our holiday. She also says it happens when she hasn't been drinking so it's not to do with the alcohol. I'm not sure I believe this either as I think she just doesn't want to admit she suddenly cant take alcohol.

Hm :frown: Not sure what to do. I know posting about it on TSR isn't going to help in the slightest... just wondered if anyone else knows anything about this?

i'm no expert but depending on how much and how frequently she used to drink, it could be that her liver (or some other organ which plays a relevant role in processing alcohol) can't handle it.

no, it does sound pretty ****ed though. :|

the only similar case i know is a dude who was taken to hospital after drinking loads, when i say loads, i mean loads. anyway, he had like a week hangover but decided to go out, one drink and BAM, entire contents of stomach on the floor.

Maybe she's pregnant?!

I did consider that as she slept with someone recently... but she started being sick before that! And before that time she hasn't had sex for about a year.

silence, that does sound like the most likely solution. She did used to drink a lot and frequently.

Me and my friends have noticed that every now and then we do lose our tolerance for a while, for seemingly no good reason. Each of us has polished off a whole bottle of spirits by ourselves at one time or another, but then for some periods after a couple of drinks we're vomiting and lying down.

Is it with all drinks or a particular one? Because one of my friends had a particularly boozy evening with a bottle of JD and now has no tolerance for it whatsoever.

Yeah I definitely know what you mean about sometimes losing you tolerance. One night I can drink loads and hardly feel it and another time I can have a few and be totally gone! At first I did think this was possible, but this has been every time she has gone out for about 3 weeks. I think it's with all drinks as well.

It's probably best getting it checked out by a doctor. I'm not saying it is anything, but they do keep telling us how all this binge drinking is causing organ damage in younger and younger people.

I'd just like to add to the discussion.

As far as i know i'm not a lightweight as i've only been sick due to alcohol once, but one evening i went out and had 4 pints of beer on an empty stomach, diddn't have enough time to eat, and i know it was a bad idea. Anywho.

i was sick once after i left and felt extremely sick at home and now whenever i have more than about 3 pints of lager i start to feel sick. I'm not sure if its all in the mind but i feel like i definiately can't take the lager like i used too.

I'm pretty sure its not the alchohol content though, i can drink quite alot of wine, spirits, cider etc and not feel sick. infact i can drink quite alot of real ale and not feel sick. But there seems to be something about lager that makes me feel like i might be sick.

Thoughts?

christ, most of you are talking bout liver damage and too much alcohol, and some of you are only 18. come back in a few years and talk bout liver damage.

on a night out how much would this person drink?

its not impressive to drink lots, hell if i could get drunk off 4 pints id love it.

ive worked out ive spent about £18,000 in 5 years on drink. thats not impressive its a disgrace, totally changed my view on drinking a lot thats for sure.

I know of someone who had genuine liver damage at 17. Absolutely shocking really.

Have you maybe tried talking to her mum/dad about it if you know them well enough? Obviously if she doesn't want to tell you about it there's not much you can do but if you know her parents well enough you could ask them about it.

I know two people who've had the same problem. Both took a couple of weeks off drinking and drank loads of water. Now they're back on form.

perhaps her stomach lining has been irritated, not necessrily from the alcohol, it could be from some other cold or illness, this might make her throw up, alcohol can make u throw up too so perhaps the 2 combined leads to an increase?

has she recently lost weight, this can lower the amount of alcohol u can handle, i think she really needs to see a doctor, it could be something simple like a tummy bug which can easily get cleared up

Maybe she's on medication that she shouldn't be drinking with but doesn't want to say.....
