Bristolian Snobbery

I have lived in Bristol all my life, and as I'm off to Uni next Saturday (woo hoo!) I had to get something off my chest before I start being an official Bristol Uni Student. I have been reading all these websites and things and something which really stands out to me ( and I know this happens in every city with two unis) is the pathetic snobbery people hold towards UWE students and the establishment itself.

All this talk of UWE not being a 'real' Uni  .....does it disappoint anyone else? I thought Bristol Uni students were meant to be intelligent people. And in a lot of the bumpf they just turn out to be stuck up ******s. UWE aren't innocent, I'll admit, often branding Bristol students as 'toffs' - but then again - sometimes I feel like I don't blame them.

Why can't people just get along?

agreed...here's to everyone just getting on hey. which uni you off to? x :p:

We can get along, but if an employer was looking at two candidates, they would pick the Bristol uni candidate over the UWE.

It's more healthy banter than anything else, namely rowing and cross-uni football matches!

*******s - last year several windows got smashed by bristol students firing into the flat of some UWE ones - and did you see the spoof epigram? it may've been funny - but it was also ****ing offensive.

mostly just shows that no matter what your grades were you can still be a conceited immature ****

God, is it really that bad? Eeek.

I bumped into a guy from the year above at a party a while back and he goes to UWE...when I said I was going to Bristol he joked that we couldn't talk anymore. Obviously, he wasn't serious, but I thought it was all just joking around like Oxford/Oxford Brookes?- Or is that bad aswell?

Where did you read about the windows? Also how do you know the motivations and that it wasn't an unrelated thing? I can't remember reading about it, although I do remember the spoof epigram. There's always exceptions but for the most part any anti-UWE snobbery is done in a jokey fashion (not by me I might add) and they certainly give as they get, and even start it half the time by calling bris uni students stuck up etc.

nah, don't let it put you off. in my experience of 2 years there i've never come across anything particularly hateful bar some jokes (if you go to Wedgies' nightclub on a friday both sets of students mix together really well)!

Not that i've heard.
It's just an age old tradition in Uni cities - someone always has to be sick in the punch at a party. I have just become more aware of it as I head into Bristol Uni - Most of my mates are from UWE! I was just wondering if it bothers other people as much as it does me.

Ok thanks!
I just presumed everyone mixed well on nights out and around the city cos everyone is students so surely the actual uni doesn't matter. I did hear some random sorry (on here I think actually) about a tropheying competition where uwe students stole a traffic light and then bristol people stole a penguin from the zoo?!?! I'm guessing thats not actually true!

My cousin goes to Oxford Brookes and she says the Oxford students refer to them as 'The Early Learning Centre'. Joking around is fine. We make fun of their more recent Uni status and they make fun of our snobbery.

Its nothing personal. That's when it starts getting out of hand. I acctually know a guy who is going to UWE and I'm hoping to stay in touch with him. Hey .. the more students the better!

A penguin from the zoo! haha... that's gotta be difficult - unless 'inside help' is brought into effect.

I think people from the Bristol uni's mix reasonably well in practice - the divisions, if there are any, seem to me to be roused mainly within internet forums etc. Seemingly, there are a small number of pubs/clubs that are reputable for being popular with one group of students or the other, but these are in the minority and most venues are quite evenly balanced - particularly, as Miles pointed out, those such as Wedgies, which are popular with everyone, whether Bristol, UWE, even the OU! :p:

I'm sure you didn't mean to imply it like this but while I accept being a snob as being a bad thing, surely being white isn't?
If you don't understand what I mean, try switching the colour around and see how racist it sounds! :s-smilie:

(Yes I know white isn't strictly speaking a colour :p: )
im sure its nothing, dont let it get to you christ! i certainly have nothing against anyone
